Chapter 5 - Unlocking the Past

The acrid smell of gunpowder hung heavy in the study.

Lorenzo kicked the rifle away from the groaning operative on the floor, keeping his weapon trained on the doorway while using his foot to shove the man’s unconscious body into the corner. He hit the wall switch, flooding the room with harsh overhead light.

“Are you hit?” Lorenzo asked sharply, looking back toward the desk.

Nina slowly stood up, brushing shards of wood and drywall from her black uniform. Her hands were shaking uncontrollably, but her eyes were locked on Ghost. The Rottweiler was standing over the immobilized mercenary, a low, triumphant rumble vibrating in his throat. His muzzle was stained with a smear of dark oil from the man’s tactical vest.

“I’m okay,” Nina breathed, rushing over and dropping to her knees beside the dog. “Ghost... are you hurt? Did they get you?”

Ghost immediately released the man’s arm, turning his massive head toward Nina and nudging her shoulder frantically with his wet nose, checking her over as if she were the one in danger.

Lorenzo watched them, a profound realization settling into his amber eyes. The dog hadn't protected him; the dog had protected her. And in doing so, the dog had just saved Lorenzo’s life.

“We have about three minutes before Vance’s secondary team breaches the ground floor lobby,” Lorenzo said, walking over to the desk and picking up a heavy tactical multi-tool from his emergency kit. “And when they do, they won’t use flashbangs. They’ll bring explosives.”

“Then we have to run,” Nina said, looking up at him in panic.

“We aren't running,” Lorenzo replied, his voice chillingly calm as he knelt beside Ghost. “We’re opening the vault.”

Nina blinked. “What are you talking about?”

“The collar,” Lorenzo said, gesturing to the heavy steel buckle and the laser-etched serial numbers. “Your father didn't just hide files on a flash drive. He encoded them directly into a military-grade biometric micro-chip embedded inside the hardware casing. That’s why the broker sold him to me under a false identity. They couldn't crack the encryption without the primary biological key.”

Nina stared at him, bewildered. “What biometric key?”

Lorenzo reached out slowly, letting Ghost sniff his knuckles before gently resting his fingers against the Rottweiler’s heavy jaw. “A DNA signature or a voiceprint belonging to the only person the dog trusted implicitly from the day he was born.”

Nina’s breath hitched. She looked down at her own hands.

May you like

“You,” Lorenzo whispered. “You’re the key.”
