Chapter 8 - The Federal Courthouse Steps

The morning sun rose over the majestic granite columns of the federal courthouse, casting long, sharp shadows across the grand stone steps.
At 8:45 AM, federal marshals and reporters were already gathering outside for an unrelated high-profile corporate trial, creating a buzzing atmosphere of media cameras and legal briefs.
Elena parked her sedan near the restricted loading zone. We stepped out into the crisp morning air, each of us carrying a secure briefcase containing certified copies of the archive files.
As we walked toward the grand marble entrance, a sleek black town car pulled up to the curb with screeching tires.
The rear door swung open, and Marcus Vance stepped out, flanked by two imposing private attorneys in tailored suits. His face was a mask of cold, controlled fury.
"David!" Marcus called out, his voice sharp and commanding as he crossed the plaza toward us. "You are making a catastrophic mistake. Turn around right now, hand over those files, and we can still settle this privately."
I stopped on the top stone step, turning to face my uncle for the first time since our confrontation in his penthouse office.
"There is nothing left to settle, Marcus," I said, my voice steady and unyielding. "Your empire of lies is finished."
Marcus stepped closer, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. "You think a few stolen warehouse files are going to bring down Vance Global? The federal judge presiding over this district is a personal appointee of our board. By noon today, those documents will be sealed under national security provisions, and you will be facing felony burglary charges."
"Not if we file them under the Federal Whistleblower Protection Act," a calm, authoritative voice echoed from the top of the stairs.
We all turned. Stepping out from the heavy oak doors of the courthouse was Assistant United States Attorney Thomas Vance—no relation to Marcus, but a senior federal prosecutor specializing in corporate corruption. He was flanked by two armed federal marshals.
A-USA Vance looked down at Marcus with a completely neutral, professional expression.
"Mr. Marcus Vance," the prosecutor said clearly, his voice carrying across the courthouse plaza. "We have been auditing Vance Global’s philanthropic and medical trust accounts for the past six months. We received an encrypted whistleblower package this morning containing verified evidence of corporate embezzlement, fraudulent adoption manipulation, and child endangerment."
Marcus’s face instantly drained of all color. His confident, untouchable veneer finally shattered completely.
"That... that is an unsubstantiated fabrication," Marcus stammered, stepping back as the federal marshals moved down the stone steps toward him.

"You are welcome to explain that to a federal grand judge," A-USA Vance replied calmly. "Step forward, please, Mr. Vance."
