Chapter 7 - The Escape from the Vault

"Run!" Elena hissed, grabbing my arm and pulling me down the intersecting aisle between rows of towering steel shelving units.
We sprinted through the labyrinth of municipal archives as heavy boots pounded against the concrete floor behind us.
"Intruders in Sector B! Cut them off at the freight elevator!" a voice shouted over a tactical radio.
I vaulted over a stack of discarded cardboard boxes, my backpack heavy with the stolen evidence. Elena moved with surprising athletic agility, leading us toward the far corner of the basement where an old maintenance shaft opened up into the alleyway.
"Through here!" she yelled, slamming her shoulder against the rusted push-bar of the emergency maintenance hatch.
The door burst outward into the cool, damp night air of the alley. We stumbled out onto the wet asphalt, the rain falling harder now, slicking the pavement beneath our shoes.
Behind us, shouts echoed from the open doorway as security guards spilled out into the alley.
"Get in the car!" Elena shouted, sprinting toward her sedan parked fifty feet down the dark side street.
I dove into the passenger seat just as Elena slammed her foot on the accelerator. The tires squealed, throwing up a spray of rainwater as we rocketed around the corner and merged into the empty downtown traffic stream just as a pair of private security SUVs screeched out of the alley behind us.
We drove for twenty minutes, twisting through winding residential backstreets until Elena was certain we hadn't been followed. She pulled the car to a quiet curb beneath the flickering amber glow of a streetlamp, turning off the headlights.
In the silence of the car, I reached into my backpack, pulled out the manila folders, and flipped open the pages.
The evidence was undeniable. Every signature, every wire transfer, every corrupt medical affidavit was right there in black and white.
"We did it," I exhaled, leaning my head back against the seat, completely drained of adrenaline. "We have everything we need to destroy Marcus's firewall."
Elena glanced over at me, her expression grim but resolute. "Not yet, David. Having the files is only half the battle. Tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM, Marcus will file an emergency injunction in federal court to have these documents declared stolen property obtained through illegal trespassing. If we want to checkmate him, we can't go through regular channels."
"Then where do we go?" I asked.

"Straight to the United States Attorney’s Office," Elena replied, sliding the gear shift into drive. "Before the probate court opens its doors. We’re going to drop this directly onto the desk of the federal prosecutor investigating Vance Global’s corporate fraud."
