Chapter 6 - The Midnight Raid on the Archive

Midnight descended over the city in a blanket of heavy, humid fog.

According to Elena’s digital intelligence, the physical hard copies of the original adoption files—the ones containing the unedited signatures and the true medical records of Noah’s birth—were stored in a secondary off-site physical archive located in the basement of an old municipal warehouse downtown.

Marcus’s legal team planned to destroy those physical documents during the scheduled building maintenance at 8:00 AM.

That left us exactly six hours to secure the evidence.

I left Lily and Noah safely in Sarah’s care, locking every smart-lock and security gate on the house. Elena met me at the edge of the industrial district in her dark sedan, handing me a tactical flashlight and a master bypass key card.

"The archive is secured by a basic biometric lock, but the secondary fire exit uses an old mechanical latch," Elena instructed as we parked two blocks away from the warehouse in the shadows. "Once inside, look for Vault Cabinet 409. The files are labeled under Project Thorne."

"What about security?" I asked, checking the battery on my phone.

"Private night patrol swings through every forty minutes," Elena replied calmly. "We have a window of precisely twelve minutes before the next checkpoint."

We slipped through the rusted chain-link perimeter gate like ghosts, navigating the dark, damp loading docks of the warehouse district. The rain began to mist against our jackets as we located the heavy steel fire exit door.

With a soft, practiced click of Elena’s bypass card, the latch gave way.

We stepped into the freezing, subterranean darkness of the archive basement. Rows upon rows of towering metal shelving units stretched out into the gloom, holding decades of municipal and corporate history.

My flashlight beam cut through the dust motes dancing in the air. Row A, Row B, Row C... Cabinet 400... Cabinet 405... Cabinet 409.

There it was. A heavy steel filing cabinet secured with a digital combination lock.

"Do you have the code?" I whispered, looking back at Elena.

She stepped up to the keypad, pulling a small decoding device from her pocket and plugging it into the data port. A series of green lights flashed across the interface.

*Beep. Click.*

The heavy metal drawer slid open smoothly.

I shone my flashlight into the interior. Inside sat three thick manila folders labeled with red warning stickers: CLASSIFIED - VANCE GLOBAL EXECUTIVE HOLDINGS.

I reached in and pulled them out, flipping open the primary file. The original birth certificate of Nathaniel Thorne—and right beside it, the signed medical affidavit proving Vanessa had orchestrated the hospital switch with the assistance of a bribed obstetrician.

"Got them," I breathed, sliding the documents into my waterproof tactical backpack.

Suddenly, the harsh glare of an overhead security floodlight snapped on, illuminating the entire basement aisle.

"Step away from the filing cabinet with your hands where we can see them!" a gruff, authoritative voice echoed from the stairwell entrance.

Footsteps rushed down the concrete stairs—not the slow, casual pace of a routine night watchman, but the synchronized, tactical advance of professional private security guards.
