Chapter 4 - The Desperate Pilgrimage and the DNA Reality**

The rejection of Vanguard Global Real Estate’s contract by Vance Digital Media sent shockwaves through Ethan’s corporate board. Within a week, the firm’s stock dipped, major investors panicked, and Ethan’s CEO threatened him with immediate termination unless he could salvage the partnership.

Desperation turned into outright obsession. Ethan couldn't sleep, couldn't eat, and couldn't stop thinking about Rachel. Not just because of her staggering wealth and success, but because of a haunting revelation that had recently shattered his worldview.

Three months prior, during a routine annual physical, Ethan’s physician had ordered a comprehensive genetic update. The results revealed a shocking, life-altering medical error: Ethan was not permanently sterile. A rare, temporary autoimmune condition in his twenties had temporarily suppressed his fertility markers, leading to a misdiagnosis that doctors had never bothered to correct. He was fully capable of fathering children.

When Ethan realized that the twins—Leo and Lily—were born right around the time he had forced Rachel out, a sickening, terrifying thought exploded in his mind.

*What if they were his biological children all along?*

He remembered the fertility clinic paperwork he had signed years ago. He remembered the anonymous donor pool. And then the terrifying mathematical probability hit him: through a freak twist of medical coincidence or clinic cross-referencing, those children might actually carry his own DNA.

Driven by a desperate, maniacal need for redemption and lineage, Ethan began stalking Rachel’s daily routine. He waited outside her office building, followed her luxury SUV, and finally tracked her down to an upscale children's park in downtown Columbus on a sunny Saturday afternoon.

Rachel was sitting on a wooden bench, watching Leo and Lily laugh and chase each other across the playground turf. They were spitting images of beauty—Leo with his bright, intelligent eyes, and Lily with a fierce, independent smile that belonged entirely to Rachel.

Heavy footsteps crunched on the gravel path behind her.

“Rachel. Please... stop walking away from me.”

Rachel turned her head. Ethan stood there, looking disheveled, hollow-eyed, and utterly pathetic in a rumpled suit jacket. He fell heavily to his knees right on the gravel path beside her bench, grabbing the hem of her coat with trembling hands.

“What do you want, Ethan?” Rachel asked, her voice dangerously calm.

“I know the truth,” Ethan sobbed openly, tears streaming down his face as he stared hungrily toward the playground at the twins. “I found out... I found out I wasn't actually sterile. The doctors made a mistake years ago. I can have children. I do have children!”

Rachel didn't flinch. She looked down at him with profound pity and disgust. “You think because you miraculously found out you can reproduce that you get to claim my kids? After you called them strays? After you abandoned us with fifteen dollars and a demand for an abortion?”

“Please, Rachel! I was wrong! I was a coward!” Ethan wailed, pressing his forehead against her knees while onlookers stared in shock. “I’ll give you everything! My entire estate, my stocks, my house! Just let me be their father! Let me beg for your forgiveness!”

Leo, noticing the strange man crying near his mother, ran over quickly, stepping protectively in front of Rachel. He looked down at Ethan with big, brave eyes just like his mother's.

“Go away, mister,” five-year-old Leo said firmly, crossing his small arms. “You make Mommy sad. We don't need you.”

Hearing those words from the little boy’s mouth broke something inside Ethan. He collapsed onto the gravel, sobbing uncontrollably as realization crashed down upon him. He had traded his entire family for pride, cruelty, and corporate greed, and no amount of money could ever buy back what he had so recklessly thrown into the fire.

Rachel stood up smoothly, scooped Lily into her arms, and took Leo’s small hand in hers.

“Stay away from us, Ethan,” Rachel said quietly, looking down at him one last time. “You made your choice five years ago. Now live with the silence.”

She walked away down the sunlit path, leaving a broken, weeping man kneeling in the dirt, completely erased from the dynasty he had tried to destroy.
