Chapter 3 - Five Years Later—The Desperate Encounter**

Five years had passed in a blur of hard work, quiet triumph, and deep maternal fulfillment. Rachel Lel—now Rachel Vance, having legally reclaimed her mother’s maiden name—was no longer the destitute, broken pregnant woman crying on a basement floor. Through relentless perseverance, her marketing firm, Vance Digital Media, had exploded into a multi-million-dollar enterprise headquartered in a sleek downtown glass-and-steel high-rise. She owned a stunning modern estate overlooking the river, drove a luxury electric SUV, and most importantly, Leo and Lily were thriving five-year-old kindergartners full of boundless curiosity and bright smiles.
On a bright Friday afternoon, Rachel arranged to meet a major new corporate client at an exclusive downtown restaurant in Columbus to finalize a massive real estate advertising contract.
The restaurant was the epitome of high-society elegance—crystal chandeliers, polished mahogany tables, and soft jazz playing in the background. Rachel walked in wearing a tailored emerald-green blazer, black trousers, and expensive diamond-stud earrings that symbolized every drop of sweat she had poured into her success.
She took her seat at a private corner booth reserved for the executive meeting, reviewing her contract tablet.
A few moments later, the restaurant manager approached the table, escorting the lead representatives from Vanguard Global Real Estate.
Rachel looked up, her professional smile locked in place.
The color instantly drained from the face of the lead executive stepping forward.
It was Ethan Shaw.
He looked older, harder. The arrogant, smooth-talking corporate climber now bore deep stress lines around his eyes, and his hair was flecked with premature gray. Behind him walked Vanessa, dripping in designer pearls, looking haughty and unimpressed.
Ethan froze mid-step, his jaw dropping so low it nearly hit the floor. His eyes darted frantically over Rachel’s tailored designer suit, her expensive jewelry, her radiant confidence, and the corporate contract folder resting in front of her.
“R-Rachel?” Ethan stammered, his voice cracking with sheer disbelief. He looked like a man staring directly at a ghost rising from the grave.
Rachel didn't flinch. She didn't cower, tremble, or look away. She simply closed her tablet with a soft click, leaned back against the plush leather booth, and fixed him with a calm, utterly freezing gaze.
“Hello, Ethan,” she said, her voice dripping with cool, executive poise. “I believe you and your associates are the representatives for Vanguard Global Real Estate. Please, sit down. We have a multi-million-dollar business proposition to discuss.”
Vanessa looked between Ethan and Rachel, her eyes narrowing with suspicion. “Ethan, do you know this woman? Why is she running this meeting?”
Ethan swallowed hard, his throat dry as bone, sinking heavily into the chair across from her. The mighty executive who had once thrown his pregnant wife out into the cold was now trembling like a frightened child.
“I—I didn't know,” Ethan choked out, staring at Rachel as if she were an apparition. “I heard you were... I thought you were struggling...”
“Struggling?” Rachel cut him off sharply, her voice like a razor blade slicing through the expensive air. “Because you stole my home, poisoned my family against me, and told me I'd never survive alone? You severely underestimated who you were dealing with, Ethan.”
Vanessa slammed her menu down on the table, her face flushing with anger. “Excuse me! We came here to discuss corporate real estate development, not to listen to your personal sob story! Who the hell do you think you are?”
Rachel turned her piercing gaze toward Vanessa, smiling coldly. “I am the majority shareholding owner and CEO of Vance Digital Media, Mrs. Shaw. And your husband’s firm desperately needs my marketing agency to salvage their collapsing commercial portfolio this quarter.”
Vanessa whipped her head around to glare at Ethan. “You didn't check who the client was before setting up this meeting?!”
Ethan couldn't speak. His mind was racing, overwhelmed by a sudden, terrifying wave of panic. But his corporate desperation quickly collided with something far more toxic: his desperate, pathetic urge to regain control.
“Rachel,” Ethan whispered hoarsely, leaning across the table, ignoring his furious wife entirely. “Please... we need to talk. Privately. About the past. About... about the children.”
Rachel’s eyes flashed with pure, unadulterated fury. She stood up slowly from the booth, looking down at the man who had abandoned his own flesh and blood five years ago.
“You forfeited any right to speak about my children the day you called them strays, Ethan,” Rachel said quietly, loud enough for everyone at neighboring tables to hear. “Enjoy your lunch. Your contract is officially denied.”

Without waiting for a reply, Rachel turned on her heel and walked out of the restaurant with effortless grace, leaving Ethan sitting in total, humiliating ruin.
