Chapter 1 - The Cold Kitchen Ultimatum and the Family Betrayal**

The afternoon sun was sinking low behind the suburban rooftops of Columbus, casting long, harsh shadows across our kitchen floor, but inside, the atmosphere felt frozen in a deep, agonizing winter. Rachel Lel clutched the warm ultrasound printout in her hand, her heart fluttering with a fragile, hard-earned joy. Seven grueling months of relentless morning sickness, swollen ankles, and sleepless nights spent propped up on three pillows had all culminated in a single, miraculous medical truth: twins. Two strong, rhythmic little heartbeats had flashed on the clinic monitor earlier that day.
For three years of marriage, Rachel had believed she was the luckiest woman alive. She had married Ethan Shaw at twenty-one, completely enamored by his old-fashioned charm and gentle demeanor. It wasn't until after the wedding altar that Ethan confessed a devastating truth: a congenital medical condition rendered him sterile, completely unable to father biological children. Rachel had made her peace with it instantly. She loved the man, not his medical chart. But society, holiday gatherings, and relentless family gossip were cruel. When friends began posting glowing nursery photos and celebrating first birthdays, the pressure cracked Ethan’s polished exterior. It was Ethan who had obsessively researched the fertility clinic, Ethan who had sat across the kitchen table begging her to consider donor-assisted IVF, and Ethan who had eagerly signed every consent form with absolute conviction.
Rachel had carried those babies for seven long months, felt them kick against her ribs, and loved them with every fiber of her soul.
A little after seven that evening, the front door clicked open. Rachel pushed herself up off the sofa, pressing one hand gently under her heavy belly, smiling brightly before the door even fully swung inward.
“Hey, honey,” she greeted softly, her voice filled with warmth.
Ethan Shaw stepped inside, his shoulders slumped, his eyes refusing to meet hers. He toed off his shoes in heavy, dead silence like a man returning to an empty, haunted house. Assuming he had merely endured a grueling day of meetings at his corporate firm, Rachel let it slide, stepping closer to share her joy. “I had my checkup today. Both babies are doing great. I keep going back and forth on names — what do you think?”
Ethan stopped dead in his tracks. He turned slowly, his face drained of all warmth, his eyes cold as jagged glass.
“I want you to terminate.”
The words hit Rachel like a physical blow of freezing ice water. She stood frozen in the center of the kitchen, her hand still resting protectively over her swollen belly, certain her ears were deceiving her. “What did you say?”
“You heard me loud and clear. Get rid of them,” Ethan snapped, his voice devoid of any human emotion.
Rachel stared at him, the man she had loved and trusted dissolving before her very eyes. “You wanted this,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “You sat right at this table and told me it didn't matter whose DNA it was. You said you'd raise them as your own. And Ethan, I'm seven months along! They could survive outside me right now. They kick every single time they hear your voice.”
Ethan let out a sharp, cynical laugh, raking a hand through his hair as he began pacing the linoleum. “Do you have any remote idea what two kids cost in this economy? Daycare, medical bills, college funds, all of it! If we pour every penny into someone else's genetic material, what on earth is left for our own real kids later on down the road?”
“These are our own kids!” Rachel cried out, the horror finally breaking through her disbelief. “And children aren't retail items you return when you get bored!”
“So, are you doing it or not?” Ethan demanded, glaring at her with open, burning impatience, as if she were a nuisance holding up a corporate meeting.
“No,” Rachel said, her voice dropping into a flat, unyielding tone. “I am not. You know precisely what this pregnancy has cost my body and my soul.”
“Fine,” Ethan sneered, shrugging his shoulders with chilling indifference. “You want them so badly, you have them. But I am not lifting a single finger, I am not paying a single dime, and the second those babies are born, you're raising them completely alone—because we are getting a divorce.”
The word divorce knocked the remaining air straight out of her lungs. Three years of absolute devotion, shattered in a single sentence.
“They're not my blood,” Ethan muttered, walking past her toward the bedroom. “Why would I waste my life on another man's strays?”
He slammed the bedroom door shut, leaving Rachel standing alone in the freezing kitchen.
Later that night, her phone lit up on the counter. It was her mother-in-law, Linda Shaw.
“Rachel, sweetie,” Linda's voice chirped through the speaker. Hearing the warm tone made Rachel realize her face was drenched in tears she hadn't even felt falling. She quickly wiped her cheeks. “Ethan just called me. He says you two are either terminating the pregnancy or getting a divorce. What on earth is going on? He was thrilled about this baby. Did you do something to upset him?”
“I didn't do anything, Linda,” Rachel choked out. “He's the one who decided he doesn't want them.”
“That’s impossible.” A heavy pause hung on the line. Rachel could practically hear the manipulative wheels turning in Linda's head. Then came the chilling realization: “They’re not his, are they?”
Rachel opened her mouth to explain the IVF process, but found her voice entirely trapped. Because biologically, technically, they weren't Ethan’s. And since Ethan had orchestrated the entire IVF procedure behind closed doors, how could she possibly make a hostile, biased mother-in-law understand?
Her dead silence was all the confirmation Linda needed.
“Oh, you shameless, lying little—” Linda shrieked venomously before slamming the phone down in her ear.
That sudden shock of betrayal triggered something catastrophic in Rachel’s exhausted body. Sharp, blinding pain tore through her abdomen, and the world went completely black.
When Rachel finally forced her heavy eyelids open, the harsh, sterile smell of a hospital room filled her senses. But before she could even orient herself, a familiar, screeching voice pierced through the door—same pitch, same vicious venom as Linda’s phone call.
“Your daughter is a cheating whore!” Linda's voice echoed loudly into the hallway. “My son gave her everything, and she goes behind his back to get pregnant by another man! She should be utterly ashamed to show her face in public!”
Rachel slowly turned her head on the hospital pillow. Sitting right beside her bed was her father, Robert Lel. At the sight of his stern, cold expression, fresh tears spilled down her cheeks.
“Dad—” she sobbed.
“Whose babies are they?” Robert interrupted harshly. Not are you okay? Not hello, daughter. Just an immediate, accusatory interrogation.
“They are Ethan’s children, legally and morally,” Rachel pleaded through her tears. “Someone else provided the genetic sample for the IVF, but Ethan chose this. He planned this!”
Standing near the doorway with her arms crossed smugly over her chest was Rachel’s stepsister, Khloe. “Oh, please, do you actually think we’re all complete morons, Rachel?” Khloe sneered. “The Shaws have been desperate for a grandchild for years. If those babies were actually Ethan’s, why would his entire family be screaming for you to abort them? Just own up to what you did!”
Her father stood up, his jaw set in stone. “End the pregnancy immediately,” Robert commanded coldly. “Then go crawl back to Linda and beg for forgiveness. If you grovel hard enough, maybe they'll take pity on you.”
“I didn't do anything wrong!” Rachel cried out.
Her father’s eyes turned cold with disgust. Without another word, he turned his back on her and walked out of the room, with Khloe and her stepmother following closely behind like a pack of wolves.
Only after her family had completely abandoned her did Ethan slip quietly into the room. He lingered by the door like a shadow.
“Get rid of it,” Ethan whispered coldly.
Rachel looked up at him, the man she had loved now appearing as a monster. “You trashed my name to my own father just to force me into submission.”
“I’m simply making sure you understand the reality of your situation,” Ethan replied smoothly. “I will never claim those children, and not a single soul in either family will ever believe they are mine.”
“Then give me a divorce,” Rachel fired back, her survival instinct finally overriding her grief.
Ethan actually chuckled, a cruel, mocking sound. “You're really going through with the birth? Fine. Divorce it is. But don't expect to walk away with the house.”
“We bought that house together during our marriage! Half of it legally belongs to me!”
“Why should my hard-earned house go to house another man's strays?” Ethan spat.

*Strays.* Hearing the man she had shared a bed with refer to his own planned children that way made Rachel feel physically ill. She realized then that she had never truly known him at all. Until this very second.
