Chapter 8 - The Family Court

The family courtroom was small, quiet, and suffocatingly tense.

Judge Sarah Sterling sat behind her elevated mahogany bench, her expression stern as she reviewed the thick federal indictment files detailing Mark’s confession, the wiretaps, and the forged hospital records from eight years ago.

Mark sat at the defense table on the left, looking smaller, older, and utterly defeated in an orange jumpsuit. Across the aisle sat Elena and Richard Vance, their high-priced lawyers frantically whispering arguments into their ears.

And sitting in the second row, between a court-appointed social worker and Cole, was Stefan.

He looked small in his oversized school blazer, clutching a crumpled blue sweater in his lap, his wide gray eyes darting nervously around the wood-paneled room. When our eyes met across the aisle, my heart violently ached. I wanted to run to him, scoop him up in my arms, and never let go. But I forced myself to stay seated, offering him the softest, most reassuring smile I could muster.

Stefan didn't smile back, but he didn't look away either.

"Based on the overwhelming evidence of systemic fraud, coercion, and the illegal sale of a minor presented by the federal prosecutor," Judge Sterling’s clear, ringing voice echoed through the courtroom, "this court hereby declares the 2018 adoption decree of Stefan Vance null, void, and vacated ab initio."

Elena let out a sharp, audible gasp, clutching her husband's arm as if she were about to faint.

"Furthermore," the judge continued, striking her gavel with a sharp, echoing thud, "full biological and legal custody of Stefan Reynolds is hereby immediately restored to his mother, Clara Reynolds, alongside full joint custody of Cole Reynolds."

The courtroom erupted into a flurry of motion. The social worker gently placed a hand on Stefan’s shoulder, guiding him out of the row and walking him down the center aisle toward where I stood.

My legs felt like lead.

I stepped out from behind the table, my hands trembling as Stefan stopped two feet away from me. He looked up, his identical gray eyes wide with a mixture of fear, confusion, and lingering betrayal toward the only parents he had ever known.

"Hi, sweetie," I choked out, dropping down slowly onto my knees so I was eye-level with him.

Stefan swallowed hard, his voice barely a squeak. "Are... are you really my mom?"

"Yes, baby," I sobbed, tears finally breaking free and streaming down my cheeks as I reached out and gently cupped his face with both hands, feeling the exact same warmth, the exact same skin, the exact same heartbeat I had lost eight years ago. "I’m your mom. And I am never, ever going to let you go."

Stefan hesitated for a fraction of a second before slowly, timidly, leaning forward and wrapping his small arms around my neck.

I buried my face in his dark hair, holding him so tight I thought my ribs might crack, feeling the broken pieces of my soul finally click back into place.
