Chapter 2 - The Missing Piece

The silence in the principal’s office was so absolute that the hum of the fluorescent lights overhead sounded like a roaring engine.
Stefan slowly stood up from his chair against the wall, walking over to stand beside Elena. He looked up at her, then glanced nervously over at Cole. The resemblance was haunting. It wasn't just facial features; it was the way they held their shoulders, the slight tilt of their heads when they were confused, the shape of their fingernails.
"Mom?" Stefan asked quietly, his small hand tugging at Elena’s coat sleeve. "What is she talking about? Why does she look like me?"
Elena looked down at Stefan, and for a fleeting second, a crack appeared in her icy armor. A look of genuine, haunted guilt flashed across her features before she violently suppressed it, patting Stefan’s dark hair with a manicured hand.
"Nothing, sweetie," Elena lied smoothly, forcing a tight, unconvincing smile. "The woman is just confused. She’s had a very difficult life."
"I am not confused!" I shouted, stepping around the principal’s desk. I turned my gaze back to Elena, the pieces of a horrifying puzzle suddenly locking together in my mind with brutal clarity. "Mark. Mark was the attending financial auditor for your husband's firm eight years ago. You two... you were working together while I was recovering in that sterile hospital room."
Elena’s face paled beneath her makeup, but she held her ground. "Your husband was a struggling architect who couldn't afford to pay off his mounting debts, Clara. Mark made a choice. He wanted a clean break, a fresh start, and a bank account that didn't constantly bleed red. But you? You were too fragile. You would have fallen apart trying to raise two boys on a ruined foundation."
"You traded my child!" I choked out, a sob tearing its way out of my chest as I lunged toward her.
This time, Principal Miller couldn't hold me back. I slammed my hands against Elena’s shoulders, driving her back against the wall with a fury born of eight years of stolen grief.
"Mrs. Reynolds! Stop!" the principal yelled, grabbing my waist and pulling me away.
Across the room, Cole was crying, burying his face in his small hands as he watched the chaotic scene unfold. Stefan stood paralyzed, staring at me with those identical gray eyes, terrified and overwhelmed.
"You're coming with me," I hissed at Elena, my voice shaking with unbridled rage as I wiped a tear from my cheek. "We are going to the police. We are going to court. And you are going to give me back every single day you stole from my family."
Elena adjusted her collar with shaking fingers, smoothing down her coat as she regained a fraction of her composure. She looked at me with cold, venomous disdain.
"Go ahead and call the police, Clara," Elena whispered, her voice laced with a sickening confidence. "Check the adoption registry. Check the birth certificates. Legally, Stefan was adopted through a closed, certified agency with the full legal consent of his biological father. Mark signed away all rights to the second twin the night you went under."
The words hit me like a physical blow.
*Mark.*

My husband—the man I had loved, the man who had held my hand at the hospital and told me "he didn't make it"—had not only lied to me. He had bartered away my flesh and blood for a price.
