Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

The world seemed to tilt on its axis.

The papers slipped from my trembling fingers, fluttering down onto the damp wooden planks of the pier before the wind caught them and scattered them across the dark water.

"No," I whispered, shaking my head violently as tears spilled over my eyelashes. "No, that's a lie. Mark wouldn't... he couldn't..."

"Your husband is a coward, Clara," Richard said coldly, watching me with clinical detachment. "He came to our firm begging for a bailout when your medical debts piled up. When we told him we couldn't offer an unsecured loan, he was the one who suggested collateral. He told us about the twins. He told us you were too weak to handle two babies anyway."

The room—the whole world—felt like it was spinning out of control.

Every memory of Mark holding Cole, every comforting word he had spoken over the last eight years, every smile across the breakfast table suddenly twisted into a sickening, grotesque caricature of deceit. He hadn't just lied about the baby dying; he had sold him like a piece of salvaged machinery and used the cash to buy our suburban house and our quiet, comfortable life.

"Why are you telling me this?" I choked out, wrapping my arms around myself as the cold wind bit through my jacket. "If your wife wanted to hide this, why would you bring me out here to show me proof that implicates you just as much?"

Richard’s expression softened slightly, though his eyes remained calculating.

"Because Elena is obsessed with keeping up appearances, and she’s willing to burn our entire family fortune to fight a custody battle that will drag our name through the mud for the next five years," Richard said quietly. "I’m a businessman, Mrs. Reynolds. I don't invest in losing battles."

"What are you saying?" I asked, staring at him through my tears.

"I'm saying... let’s make a deal," Richard said, stepping closer. "Drop the legal challenge against our adoption decree. In exchange, I will ensure that Stefan is allowed to know the truth when he turns eighteen. I’ll even set up a trust fund for Cole’s college tuition—paid directly from Mark’s offshore accounts that he used to hide the original transaction."

I stared at him in absolute disbelief.

"You think I can be bought off?" I hissed, stepping right up to him, my fury completely overriding my fear. "You think you can purchase my son twice? Once from my cheating husband, and a second time from me?"

Before Richard could answer, the sharp beam of a police cruiser's headlights suddenly cut through the thick fog, bathing the boathouse in blinding white light.

*WEE-WOO, WEE-WOO.*

The wailing siren shattered the quiet of the lake, followed by the heavy crunch of tires on gravel.

Richard cursed under his breath, spinning around just as two uniformed police officers spilled out of the cruiser with their hands resting on their holstered sidearms.
