Chapter 4 - The House of Cards Collapses**

By Saturday evening, Ryan Mercer’s carefully constructed world had completely disintegrated into ash. The video footage had been leaked to local news outlets by an anonymous source—likely one of the investors eager to distance themselves from a criminal scandal—and was currently trending nationwide on social media. Twitter feeds and news anchors analyzed every second of the push, turning Vanessa Hale and Ryan Mercer into the most despised public figures in Chicago.

I watched the broadcast from my hospital bed, propped up against a mountain of pillows, feeling a strange, hollow sense of peace. The physical pain in my abdomen had faded to a dull ache, replaced by the steady, healthy kicks of my baby girl, who seemed to know her mother was fighting for her survival.

The door to my hospital room clicked open. Maya walked in carrying a tray of takeout and a thick stack of legal documents, a triumphant smile plastered across her face.

“You missed the best part,” Maya announced, kicking the door shut behind her. “Vanessa was fired from her corporate position at Mercer Logistics within twenty minutes of the video dropping. Her apartment lobby in Lincoln Park is currently staked out by a pack of reporters, and rumor has it she’s already packed her bags to flee to her parents' place in Florida.”

“And Ryan?” I asked quietly, taking a sip of water.

“Locked out of his office, frozen out of his corporate accounts, and facing a grand jury indictment for financial fraud and accessory after the fact,” Maya replied, pulling up a chair and handing me a container of soup. “His defense attorneys are scrambling, but there’s no spinning a video like that. He’s completely finished.”

Right on cue, my phone buzzed violently on the bedside table.

It was an unknown number, but I recognized the frantic, breathless energy pulsing through the screen. I swiped to answer and placed it on speaker so Maya could listen.

“Emily... please,” Ryan’s voice sobbed through the speaker. He sounded broken, hollow, stripped of all the arrogance that had defined him for a decade. “Please, Em. You have to answer my calls. Drop the criminal charges. Call off your sister’s legal team. We can fix this—we can go to counseling—we can raise our daughter together—”

“Our daughter?” I interrupted, my voice steady, cold, and entirely devoid of emotion. “Ryan, the night I fell down those steps, you stepped right over me to ask if your mistress was okay. You told the paramedics I was unstable. You tried to cover up an attempted murder to protect your career.”

“I was panicked!” he cried desperately. “Vanessa manipulated me—she tricked me—!”

“No, Ryan,” I said softly. “You didn't get tricked. You just finally showed me who you really were. And now, you get to live with the consequences.”

I tapped the red end-call button, silencing his weeping voice forever. I walked into the settings menu, blocked his number permanently, and tossed the phone onto the mattress.

Maya reached across the bed and squeezed my hand tightly. “How do you feel?”

I looked down at my hand resting gently against my stomach, feeling the reassuring movement of my daughter stirring inside me. The fear that had gripped my heart on the cold stone steps was entirely gone, replaced by an unshakable strength I didn't know I possessed.

May you like

“I feel like I survived,” I whispered, smiling at my sister. “And for the first time in my life, I’m ready for whatever comes next.”
