Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Counterattack**

Three days later, I was still confined to the hospital bed under strict medical observation, but the physical pain had subsided enough for clarity to take over. Ryan had not visited once. Instead, he had sent a formal email through his corporate legal counsel demanding that I sign a non-disclosure agreement regarding his “personal life” in exchange for a meager monthly settlement. He assumed I was broken, trapped in a hospital room, and entirely dependent on his financial grace. He had no idea what was waiting for him.
On Friday morning, Ryan Mercer walked into the executive boardroom of Mercer Logistics, entirely unaware that his empire was about to implode. At thirty-five, Ryan was a rising star in Chicago real estate development—a man whose charm, tailored suits, and ruthless ambition had built a multi-million-dollar portfolio. But every single brick of that portfolio had been financed through a family trust managed by my late father, capital that Ryan had quietly manipulated under our marital asset agreements.
He took his seat at the head of the polished mahogany table, facing a panel of senior investors and board members who had gathered for an emergency quarterly review. Sitting quietly near the back of the room, flanked by two formidable attorneys from Maya’s network, was my sister.
“Gentlemen,” Ryan began smoothly, flashing his trademark charismatic smile as he adjusted his cuffs. “I apologize for the abrupt nature of this meeting. As many of you know, my personal life has experienced a... difficult transition recently. My former partner has chosen to step away due to medical complications exacerbated by personal instability. However, I want to assure you that Mercer Logistics remains entirely focused on our upcoming downtown commercial development.”
An older board member cleared his throat. “That’s fine, Ryan, but we’ve received a series of very unusual financial flags regarding the asset reallocation of the primary trust account tied to your wife’s family estate. Furthermore, there are rumors regarding a police report filed from your primary residence.”
Ryan’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, but he quickly recovered, leaning forward with an air of condescending pity. “Ah. My wife’s family estate. Let’s be entirely transparent—Emily has unfortunately suffered from severe prenatal anxiety. She fell down our steps last week during a moment of intense emotional agitation. Any financial inquiries regarding the trust are simply part of a standard marital dissolution.”
“Is that so?” a cool, sharp voice echoed from the back of the room.
Maya stood up slowly, smoothing down her blazer, and walked right up to the edge of the conference table. She didn't look at Ryan with anger; she looked at him with the clinical detachment of a surgeon preparing to excise a tumor.
“You’re lying, Ryan,” Maya said clearly, her voice cutting through the silent boardroom.
Ryan stood up, his face flushing with arrogant fury. “Who the hell let you in here? Security, remove this woman immediately—!”
“Sit down, Ryan,” one of the senior investors commanded, his tone dropping to an icy chill. “We aren't moving an inch until we see what’s on this flash drive.”
Maya calmly plugged a sleek black USB drive into the conference room’s master media console. Within seconds, the massive, wall-mounted LED display flickered to life. The audio-visual recording from the porch security camera began playing in crisp, high-definition color for every investor, lawyer, and board member to witness.
The room filled with the unmistakable sound of Vanessa’s voice taunting me, followed sharply by the violent slap of her hand against my shoulder, my body tumbling down the stone steps, and Ryan stepping out seconds later to embrace his mistress while ignoring his pregnant wife’s cries for help.
The video looped twice in absolute, suffocating silence.
Ryan stood frozen at the head of the table, the color completely draining from his face until he looked like a corpse. His mouth opened, but no words came out. His hands shook as he gripped the edge of the mahogany table.
“That... that’s out of context,” Ryan finally stammered, his voice cracking with sheer panic. “It’s a deepfake—it’s manipulation—!”
“It’s a direct download from your own home server’s encrypted cloud backup,” Maya interrupted, her eyes locking onto his with venomous precision. “And that’s just exhibit A, Ryan. We also have three years of financial records proving you embezzled trust funds to purchase luxury apartments for Vanessa, alongside the formal police report for attempted homicide and reckless endangerment filed this morning.”

The senior investor stood up slowly, buttoning his suit jacket. “Effective immediately, Mr. Mercer, you are suspended as CEO pending a full federal audit. Security will escort you from the building.”
