Chapter 2 - The Evidence in the Cloud**

The ambulance siren wailed through the damp Chicago night as the vehicle cut aggressively through traffic. Inside the cramped, sterile back of the rig, a paramedic monitored my erratic blood pressure while Maya gripped my hand so tightly her knuckles turned white. The dull, persistent ache in my lower abdomen felt like a terrifying warning, a constant reminder of how close I had come to losing everything. Every bump in the road sent sharp spasms through my pelvis, but my mind was entirely consumed by the image of that small black camera lens gleaming under the porch light. Ryan thought he controlled the narrative, but he had left behind a digital ghost that didn't lie.

By the time we arrived at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, the obstetrical emergency team was already waiting. They wheeled me through swinging double doors into a bright, chaotic trauma bay where monitors began beeping furiously. Dr. Sarah Vance—no relation to the corporate world of deceit I had just fled—slid an ultrasound wand across my lower stomach. For ten agonizing seconds, nobody spoke. The silence in the room was heavy enough to crush bone. Then, a fast, rhythmic fluttering echoed through the speakers: whoosh, whoosh, whoosh.

“Heartbeat is strong,” Dr. Vance announced with a reassuring exhale. “She’s fighting, and so are you. But you are experiencing severe uterine irritability from blunt-force trauma. We are admitting you immediately for strict bed rest and fetal monitoring.”

Maya stayed by my side as they transferred me upstairs to a quiet, private recovery room overlooking the glittering city skyline. Once the nurses dimmed the lights and left us alone, Maya pulled her chair close to the mattress. Her eyes were burning with a cold, protective fury that only an older sister could muster. “Ryan called my phone twice while we were in the ER,” Maya whispered, her voice trembling with restraint. “He told me I was enabling a hysterical breakdown and that you tripped over your own heels because you’ve been unstable lately.”

“Unstable,” I repeated bitterly, staring up at the white ceiling tile. “He’s laying the groundwork for a custody battle, Maya. Or worse, trying to cover up a felony.”

“Not if we move first,” Maya said firmly, opening her leather handbag and pulling out her sleek tablet. “Listen to me, Em. Before I drove out to the estate tonight, when you texted me that you found the messages... I didn’t just sit around. I have a college roommate who is a senior partner at a high-powered digital forensics and civil litigation firm downtown. If there is digital evidence of an assault, we need to secure it before Ryan realizes what he’s walking into.”

My heart skipped a beat. I thought about the security camera above the front steps. “The porch camera,” I said quickly. “Ryan has it synced to his home server, but the master administrator credentials were set up on our shared home network. If we can access the cloud storage before he wipes the hard drive…”

“Leave that to me,” Maya said, her fingers flying across her screen as she initiated a secure remote diagnostic tunnel. “If that camera has an external backup protocol—which most high-end smart home systems do by default—we can pull the encrypted footage straight to an off-site server.”

For the next two hours, while I rested under the dull hum of an IV drip, Maya worked in silence. Around 3:00 a.m., a soft chime echoed from her tablet. She held the screen up to my face. There, frozen in high-definition timestamped clarity, was a digital thumbnail of the front porch: Vanessa standing aggressively close, her hand visibly extended against my shoulder, the exact moment my body went over the edge, and Ryan stepping out seconds later to comfort his mistress while leaving his pregnant wife bleeding on the cold stone.

“Got it,” Maya whispered triumphantly. “Every frame. Unedited. Including the audio.”
