Chapter 4 - The Collision Course at the Executive Dinner**

The private dining room at The Sovereign, Chicago’s most exclusive five-star steakhouse, was bathed in soft amber candlelight and wrapped in thick mahogany paneling that swallowed all external noise. Arthur Vance and three other senior partners sat nervously around the polished oak table, reviewing their briefing notes while waiting for their new corporate overlord to arrive.

Grace sat quietly near the end of the table, her leather portfolio open before her, her hands resting calmly over her notes. Inside, however, her stomach was tied in knots.

At 7:00 p.m. sharp, heavy double doors swung open, and the restaurant manager stepped aside to let them pass.

Daniel Mercer walked into the room.

Time seemed to stutter and grind to a complete halt. At thirty-three—though looking sharper, harder, and even more dangerously imposing than he had five years ago—Daniel wore a bespoke charcoal three-piece suit that fit his broad shoulders like a second skin. His dark hair was threaded with faint hints of silver at the temples, and his piercing, cold grey eyes swept across the room with effortless, predatory authority. Two towering security enforcers flanked him silently, stationing themselves immediately beside the heavy doors.

Arthur Vance and the other partners scrambled to their feet, offering obsequious handshakes and nervous corporate smiles.

"Mr. Mercer, welcome to Chicago," Arthur greeted him eagerly. "We are thrilled to finalize this acquisition partnership with Mercer Global Logistics."

Daniel offered a polite, perfunctory handshake, his expression entirely unreadable. "Thank you, Arthur. Let's skip the pleasantries and get straight to the financials. My time in this city is strictly limited."

"Of course, sir. Allow me to introduce our senior financial analyst, Grace Taylor, who spearheaded the asset evaluation models for this portfolio," Arthur said, gesturing gracefully down the table.

Grace stood up slowly, her legs feeling like lead weights. She raised her eyes, forcing herself to meet that devastating, familiar gaze she had tried so hard to forget.

For a fraction of a second, Daniel Mercer looked like a man who had just been struck by lightning.

The cold, calculating CEO mask instantly shattered. His breath caught in his throat, his eyes widening in absolute, stunned disbelief as they locked onto Grace’s face. The sprawling restaurant around them seemed to vanish entirely, leaving only the space between the two of them—a space filled with five years of unanswered questions, agonizing loss, and unyielding grief.

"Grace," Daniel whispered, his deep voice cracking with a raw, desperate vulnerability that none of the corporate executives had ever heard from him before.

The other partners blinked in confusion, glancing back and forth between their boss and their lead analyst. "You... you know each other?" Arthur asked hesitantly.

Daniel didn't answer him. He didn't even blink. He began walking slowly around the length of the table, his eyes never leaving Grace’s face, ignoring protocol, ignoring the multi-million-dollar merger, ignoring the entire world.

Grace stood frozen, her heart slamming against her ribs. She braced herself for the anger, the interrogation, the fury of a powerful man whose life had been upended. But when Daniel finally stopped just inches away from her chair, there was no anger in his eyes—only a profound, devastating ocean of pain and fierce, burning relief.

"Five years," Daniel breathed out, his hand trembling slightly as he reached out, hovering just an inch from her cheek as if afraid she might evaporate like smoke if he actually touched her. "Five years I have searched every city, every state, every country on this earth. Where the hell did you go?"
