Chapter 3 - Five Years Later—The Ghost in Chicago**

Five years is a long time to build a fortress out of routine and anonymity.

In the bustling, wind-swept neighborhoods of downtown Chicago, Grace Holloway was known simply as Ms. Taylor, a diligent freelance financial analyst who kept to herself, volunteered at a local children's library on weekends, and raised a brilliant, dark-haired four-year-old boy named Leo entirely on her own.

Leo possessed his father’s striking, intense eyes—eyes that missed nothing—combined with Grace’s gentle, compassionate spirit. Every time Grace looked into his face, she saw a daily reminder of the man she had fled five years ago. She had built a quiet, stable, beautiful life far away from the dark empire of New York City. No bodyguards, no iron gates, no whispered warnings in dimly lit rooms. Just a small, sunlit apartment overlooking Lake Michigan, a steady income, and absolute peace.

Or so she thought.

It was a crisp Tuesday afternoon when the world Grace had carefully constructed began to tremble. She sat at her corner desk in the open-plan offices of Sterling Financial Management, reviewing a complex corporate restructuring portfolio for a major Midwest logistics conglomerate that had recently expanded its operations into Illinois.

Her supervisor, a sharp-eyed senior partner named Arthur Vance, dropped a thick leather-bound dossier onto the corner of her desk.

"Great work on the preliminary numbers, Grace," Arthur commended her with an approving nod. "We’re finalizing the acquisition contracts this week. The primary investor behind the buying firm is flying in from the East Coast tomorrow morning for a closed-door executive dinner to sign the final papers. I want you at that table. You built the financial models; you need to present them."

Grace smiled politely, though a faint flutter of anxiety hit her stomach. She hated high-stakes corporate dinners, but as a senior analyst, it was part of the territory. "Of course, Arthur. What’s the name of the holding firm acquiring us?"

"Mercer Global Logistics," Arthur replied casually, checking his watch. "Run by a notoriously ruthless billionaire out of New York. Guy named Daniel Mercer. Word is, he doesn't lose corporate takeovers, and he doesn't tolerate mistakes. Be sharp tomorrow night."

Grace’s blood ran instantly cold. The name hit her like a physical blow, stealing the air right out of her lungs. Her fingers gripped the edge of the desk so tightly her knuckles turned chalk white. Daniel Mercer. Five years. She had spent five years running, hiding, and ensuring her trail was wiped clean. And now, the corporate leviathan she fled was swallowing her firm whole, bringing him directly into her orbit.

"Grace?" Arthur prompted, noticing her sudden paleness. "Are you alright? You look like you've seen a ghost."

"I... yes," Grace stammered, forcing a rigid, unconvincing smile. "Just a minor migraine. I’ll be fine for the dinner tomorrow."

That night, sleep eluded her entirely. She lay awake in the dark of her bedroom, staring up at the ceiling while the wind whipped against the glass. Her mind raced with terrifying scenarios. What if he recognized her? What if he looked at her financial reports and saw her old maiden name buried deep in the corporate registry metadata? More importantly, what would happen if Daniel Mercer ever discovered he had a four-year-old son with his exact eyes running around the windy city?

By sunrise, her anxiety had reached a fever pitch, but she forced herself to dress in a sharp charcoal pantsuit, pull her hair back into a sleek chignon, and walk into the office with her head held high. You cannot run forever, she told herself. Face it, close the deal, and if he’s even in the same room, keep your distance.

Little did she know, Daniel Mercer wasn't just looking to acquire a financial firm. He had spent the last five years scouring every corner of the globe for the woman who vanished without a trace, and his private intelligence network had finally picked up a very specific trail leading straight to downtown Chicago.
