Chapter 2 - The Sister's Sanctuary and the Silent Departure**

At precisely 11:42 p.m., Grace’s sedan pulled up outside her older sister Lily’s modest apartment building in Queens. She dragged her feet up the worn concrete steps, her face pale, her eyes hollowed out by shock. When Lily pulled open apartment 4B’s door wearing faded fleece sweatpants and an oversized university sweatshirt, one single look at Grace’s shattered expression wiped all questions from her mind.

Without uttering a single word, Lily reached out, grabbed her sister by the wrist, and hauled her inside, locking the deadbolt behind them.

Grace collapsed into a chair at the small laminate kitchen table while Lily rushed to put the kettle on, brewing a pot of chamomile tea neither of them would touch. For ten long minutes, the only sound in the small kitchen was the ticking of the wall clock and Grace’s ragged, uneven breathing.

Finally, Lily pulled up a chair directly opposite her, placing a gentle hand over Grace’s cold fingers. "Did he hurt you?" she asked, her voice tight with suppressed fury.

Grace let out a dry, humorless chuckle that sounded like glass grinding together. "No."

"Then what the hell happened?" Lily demanded softly.

"I went to tell him," Grace whispered, her voice cracking as fresh tears spilled over her cheeks. "I went to the estate with the lab results in my bag. I wanted to tell him we’re having a baby. But before I even reached his study... I saw another woman standing in his arms. Kissing him, Lily. And he didn't push her away. He let her."

Lily’s jaw dropped, her eyes flashing with pure malice. "The bastard. After everything you’ve sacrificed to keep his world at arm's length? After pretending you didn't know what kind of men he did business with?"

"I'm done," Grace said, her voice dropping into a flat, terrifying register of absolute finality. "I’m not calling him. I’m not demanding explanations, and I’m certainly not going to be some quiet, hidden mistress waiting around while he entertains high-society women in red dresses behind closed doors. I’m leaving."

"Where will you go?" Lily asked, her gaze sweeping over her sister’s fragile frame.

"Far away from New York," Grace replied firmly, placing her hand protectively over her abdomen. "He’s powerful enough to find me anywhere in this tri-state area if he looks hard enough. But if I vanish completely—if I pack up my things tonight and head out west—he’ll never find us. He’ll never know about the baby."

By 3:00 a.m., Lily had helped Grace pack her entire life into the trunk and backseat of her car. They didn't pack furniture or appliances; just clothes, important documents, a box of sentimental photographs, and the medical file confirming her pregnancy. Before dawn broke over the East River, Grace kissed her sister goodbye, turned the ignition, and drove south toward the interstate, leaving her old life behind in a cloud of exhaust and broken promises.

Back at the Briar Glen estate, Daniel Mercer stood by his study window staring down at a phone that had gone completely dead. His jaw was clenched so hard a muscle ticked in his cheek. He had tried calling Grace four times after Elena Vance—an undercover federal informant working deep inside a rival syndicate—had forcefully kissed him in an attempt to plant a micro-listening device on his lapel. Daniel had shoved Elena away seconds after Grace must have arrived, realizing too late the trap that had been laid for him. But when he rushed out to the hallway, the corridor was entirely empty.

Now, her phone was switched off. And when he dispatched his most trusted enforcer, Marcus, to check her apartment in Manhattan by sunrise, Marcus returned with news that sent a cold, violent terror straight through Daniel’s veins.
