Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

By evening, the hospital room had transformed from a cage into a command center.
Marcus had brought in a portable printer and a secure satellite hotspot, turning my recovery suite into a temporary legal office. Detective Shaw had left a secured copy of the preliminary forensic report on my tray table before heading back to the precinct to process Eric’s digital devices.
The forensic summary was horrifyingly thorough.
According to the data retrieved from Eric’s phone, the plot hadn't started on Tuesday afternoon. It had begun six months ago, right around the time Helen—our financial auditor and family friend—had subtly introduced the idea of “asset consolidation.”
They had meticulously planned every detail. The icy patch on the northern bypass wasn't a random winter hazard; municipal road logs showed that a private drainage pipe had been deliberately diverted onto the tarmac forty-eight hours prior, creating a localized freeze trap precisely where my sedan’s commute route crossed the county line.
And Dr. Marcus Sterling wasn't just a consultant; he was a silent partner in Vance & Associates Holdings—the very shell corporation Arthur and Evelyn had set up to siphon my intellectual property rights out from under my design firm.
The door opened softly, and a nurse stepped in to check my vitals. Once she finished and left, Marcus looked up from his tablet, adjusting his glasses.
“Claire,” Marcus said carefully, “the police have executed a search warrant on the Vance family residence on Elm Street. They’ve already seized their corporate servers and personal laptops. What we’re looking at isn't just an ugly divorce anymore. It’s a systemic corporate conspiracy designed to eliminate you as a primary shareholder.”
“Let them tear it apart,” I said, my voice steady as I stared out the window at the flashing lights of the city below. “Every brick they laid to trap me is going to bury them.”
“There’s more,” Marcus added, tapping his screen. “The media has caught wind of the arrest. Financial blogs are already reporting that Vance & Associates stock has dropped eighteen percent in after-hours trading following the news of Eric’s detention. Arthur and Evelyn are losing control of the board as we speak.”
A slow, hard satisfaction bloomed in my chest. For years, they had treated me like a decorative ornament—someone to be managed, silenced, and eventually discarded when my father’s patent portfolio was fully integrated into their holdings.

They had forgotten one fundamental rule of business and of life: Never underestimate someone you’ve spent years trying to break.
