Chapter 2 - The Whispers of a Broken Child

I gathered my son into my arms, pulling him out of the dark alcove and into the warm light of the hallway. Ethan buried his face in the crook of my neck, clinging to my shirt with such desperate strength that his small knuckles turned stark white.

"Nobody is sending you away, Ethan. Look at me," I choked out, fighting the thick knot of panic and fury forming in my throat. "You are my boy. This is your home. Nobody is ever taking you away."

Ethan sniffled, rubbing his damp eyes against his sleeve. He looked frail, far thinner than he had six months ago. Ever since his mother passed away from a sudden aneurysm, my sweet, bright boy had retreated into himself. I had trusted Vanessa—a woman I married after a whirlwind romance, believing she would bring warmth and maternal comfort back into our shattered lives—to care for him while I worked long hours to secure our financial future.

I thought time and love would heal him. I never imagined the house I was working so hard to protect had become a psychological prison.

"Daddy," Ethan whispered, his voice trembling as he looked up at me with fearful, wide eyes. "Vanessa says I'm a bad boy. She says every time I miss Mommy, I'm breaking your heart. She made me write it down. She said if I don't write down how bad I am every single day, you'll find out I'm broken and you'll throw my toys away."

A cold, blinding rage surged through my veins—a primal fury that eclipsed anything I had ever experienced in my life.

"What did she make you write, Ethan?" I asked, keeping my voice as gentle as possible.

The boy pointed a shaking finger toward the small wooden desk in the corner of the family room, partially hidden behind a bookshelf. "In the brown notebook. The one with the green elastic band. She keeps it in her leather tote bag by the kitchen counter."

Before I could stand up, the front door swung open with a sharp click.

"Arthur? You're home early!"

Vanessa’s voice rang out from the foyer, bright, breezy, and entirely rehearsed. She stepped into the hallway, balancing a designer shopping bag in one arm, her immaculate blonde hair styled to perfection, wearing her usual designer sundress.
