Chapter 10 - The Light Returns

Life doesn't always grant us warnings before the storm arrives. Sometimes, betrayal wears a familiar face, walking into our homes, sitting at our dinner tables, and whispering poison into the ears of those we love most.

For months, I believed I was protecting my son by working tirelessly to secure our future, failing to realize that true security isn't found in bank accounts or real estate deeds, but in presence, vigilance, and unconditional love.

That afternoon when I found Ethan hiding beneath the stairs like a prisoner in his own home was the darkest moment of my life. But it was also the catalyst that tore down the illusions, exposed the rot, and forced me to become the protector my son always needed me to be.

As we stood together on the front porch that evening, watching the golden autumn sun sink below the San Bernardino horizon, painting the sky in brilliant shades of amber and violet, I knew the worst was finally behind us.

Ethan leaned his head against my shoulder, his small hand securely holding mine.

"Daddy?" he asked softly.

"Yes, my boy?"

"Are we going to stay in this house forever?"

May you like

I tightened my grip on his hand, looking out at our home—quiet, safe, and entirely our own.

"Forever and always, buddy," I smiled. "Forever and always."
