Chapter 4 - The Arrival of Justice**

Within four minutes, the piercing wail of police sirens echoed down our suburban street, followed by the heavy crunch of tires on gravel. Two county cruiser cars pulled up sharply to the curb, their emergency strobe lights painting wild red and blue patterns across our living room ceiling.
Officer Miller, a seasoned veteran with a stern expression, pushed open our front door with his hand resting cautiously on his utility belt. Behind him stood a female child protective services investigator holding a clipboard.
“Police department. Dispatch received a call reporting an infant endangerment and assault in progress. Everyone freeze and keep your hands where we can see them,” Officer Miller commanded, his sharp eyes scanning the room.
Chloe immediately dropped to her knees, sobbing louder, attempting to twist the narrative before the officers could speak to us. “Officer! Thank goodness! These people broke into my home and—”
“Ma'am, shut your mouth and step away from the kitchen island,” Officer Miller interrupted sharply, cutting through her performance. He walked past her, looking directly at Mom, who was still holding the healthy, breathing newborn safely against her chest. He then turned his gaze toward me. “Are you the caller?”
“I am,” I said, stepping forward and holding out my hospital badge along with my driver's license. “I’m an ICU nurse. This is my mother. My sister-in-law, Chloe, was caught attempting to suffocate her newborn son inside a sealed plastic food container. When my mother intervened and rescued the child, Chloe assaulted her and stole the diaper bag to prevent us from leaving.”
The CPS investigator stepped forward, her eyes narrowing as she walked over to the kitchen island. She inspected the clear plastic container, running a gloved hand along the rim, and spotted the fresh smudge marks and the faint indents on the lid. She then turned her attention to the baby in Mom’s arms, gently checking the infant's vital signs and confirming he was stable, though clearly distressed.
“Officer, I’ve secured the container,” the investigator reported smoothly. “And based on the initial physical evidence and witness testimony from a licensed medical professional, we have probable cause for an immediate emergency removal of the child.”
David went completely pale, stepping forward in a blind panic. “Wait! You can’t take my kid! My wife didn't mean it! It was just a misunderstanding about nursery organization!”
“Sir, step back,” Officer Miller ordered firmly, taking out his handcuffs. “Chloe Vance, you are under arrest for attempted child endangerment, domestic assault, and reckless endangerment of a minor. And sir, if you continue to obstruct a criminal investigation and shield a violent offender, you will be placed in cuffs right beside her.”
David froze, his arrogant bravado instantly evaporating as he watched the metallic cuffs click tightly around Chloe’s wrists. She shrieked curses and venomous threats as the officers escorted her out the front door and placed her into the back of the cruiser.
The CPS investigator carefully took the newborn from Mom’s arms, promising that he would be taken to the regional medical center for a full pediatric clearance while emergency temporary custody was formally assigned to us.
