Chapter 3 - The Broken Alliance**

“Is this true?!” David roared, pointing an accusing finger at Mom. “You hit my wife and tried to steal her child? What is wrong with you two?!”
Mom looked at her son with a mixture of profound grief and utter disbelief. “David, open your eyes! Look at the container on the kitchen island! Your wife was trying to suffocate your newborn son inside a sealed plastic box because she couldn't stand his crying!”
David blinked, glancing over at the kitchen counter where the clear container still sat open, the faint imprint of small handprints smudged against the inside plastic. He hesitated for a fraction of a second, but years of Chloe’s emotional manipulation and his own cowardly desire for an easy life quickly took over.
“That’s insane!” David shouted, stepping defensively in front of his weeping wife. “Chloe would never hurt her own baby! You’ve always hated her, Mom! You’re just looking for an excuse to tear our family apart!”
“David, I am a night-shift ICU nurse,” I cut in, my voice dangerously quiet as I closed the distance between us. “I have seen trauma, abuse, and neglect every single week of my career. I walked through that door and saw Chloe pressing her full weight down on the lid of that box with the baby trapped inside. Mom fought her off to save his life.”
Chloe whimpered softly against David’s shoulder, playing the helpless victim to perfection. “He’s lying, David... they’re both lying to get rid of me...”
David looked at me, his jaw working furiously. Instead of checking the baby, instead of questioning his wife’s hysterical contradictions, he dug his heels into the delusion. “Get out of my house. Both of you. Pack your bags and leave right now, or I’m calling the police for trespassing and assault.”
Mom let out a heartbreaking gasp, tears finally spilling over her weathered cheeks. “David... that’s your son. That’s your own flesh and blood she tried to silence.”
“I said, get out!” David screamed, pointing toward the front door.
I looked at my brother—a man I had raised and protected through our toughest years—and realized he was completely lost to the toxic spell of his wife. But I wasn't going to back down. I wasn't going to leave my nephew in a house of horrors.
“Fine, David,” I said coldly, pulling my phone from my pocket. “We’ll leave. But we aren't leaving alone, and we certainly aren't leaving quietly.”
I tapped my screen and dialed 911 directly, putting the call on speaker before pressing it to my ear.
“911, what is your emergency?” a calm dispatcher’s voice answered instantly through the quiet room.
David’s face drained of color. “What are you doing?! Hang up that phone right now!”
“Emergency services,” I said clearly, staring straight into my brother’s terrified eyes. “We need immediate police dispatch and child protective services for an infant rescue and attempted suffocation at 424 Elmwood Avenue. The perpetrator is still on the scene.”

Chloe let out a shriek of pure terror, shoving David aside as she bolted toward the back door.
