Chapter 2 - The Battle for the Diaper Bag**

Mom stumbled hard under the sudden impact, her shoulder slamming into the hallway wall, yet she never loosened her grip, keeping the newborn safely cocooned against her chest. I surged forward, thrusting myself directly between them. My hands came up defensively, my eyes locked on Chloe’s erratic movements, completely unsure of what violent impulse she might unleash next.

Mom kept edging backward toward the exit, prioritizing the baby’s safety above all else. But Chloe, moving with calculated, vicious desperation, targeted the one thing Mom still needed if she was going to survive outside with a newborn.

The diaper bag.

It sat slung over the back of the kitchen chair, packed with formula, diapers, spare clothes, and emergency medical supplies. Chloe bypassed me entirely, lunging past my outstretched arm. She clamped both hands around the canvas strap and yanked it away from Mom, using the bag as a tactical weapon to halt Mom’s escape and trap them both inside the house.

When the diaper bag changed hands, every shred of my desire to keep the domestic peace evaporated into thin air.

“Give it back, Chloe,” I commanded, my voice dropping into the cold, authoritative tone I usually reserved for critical trauma patients in the ICU.

Chloe clutched the strap to her chest, sneering as she backed toward the living room sofa. “She’s not taking my child anywhere! You both think you can run my life? This is my baby, and I’ll handle him however I see fit!”

“Handling him by suffocating him in a storage bin?!” Mom screamed back, her voice trembling with righteous fury as she cradled the crying infant. “You were trying to put him to sleep permanently, you monster! You wanted him out of your way so you could go back to your social media lifestyle!”

The truth hung heavily in the air, chilling my blood. I had suspected for weeks that Chloe resented the demands of motherhood, but I never imagined her resentment would manifest in such depraved, murderous neglect.

I stepped slowly toward her, holding my hands out. “Chloe. Hand over the bag, and step away from the door. Right now. Or I swear to God, I will call the police and child protective services before you can blink.”

Chloe flinched, recognizing the unyielding steel in my voice. For a second, hesitation flickered across her face. Then, hearing the front gate click open outside, her expression twisted into a sickening display of theatrical panic.

The front door unlocked, and my brother, David, stepped into the hallway carrying bags of groceries. He took one look at Mom holding a crying baby, Chloe clutching a diaper bag with a red mark across her cheek, and me standing between them like a tactical guard.

“What the hell is going on here?!” David dropped the groceries, his eyes darting frantically around the room.

Before Mom or I could utter a single syllable, Chloe burst into loud, fabricated tears, rushing toward her husband and burying her face in his chest.

“David! Thank god you’re here!” Chloe sobbed hysterically. “Your mother and your brother... they’ve lost their minds! I was just organizing the nursery storage bins, and they attacked me out of nowhere! Your mother slapped me across the face and tried to kidnap my baby!”

David’s head snapped toward us, his face flushing dark red with immediate, blind rage.
