Chapter 2 - The Morning After and the Family Trap**

The fluorescent lights of St. Jude’s Emergency Room hummed overhead as I sat rigidly in the waiting area, my phone clutched tightly in my cold hands. Brandon had been discharged with a sling and a heavy dose of pain medication, his parents hovering around him like protective vultures. When they caught sight of me sitting quietly by the vending machines, Beatrice marched over, her eyes blazing with malice.
“You’ve sealed your fate, Clara,” Beatrice whispered venomously, leaning close so the hospital staff wouldn't hear. “Your father’s little gym back in Nashville? The property title has already been contested. Charles filed a fraudulent lien against it this morning using forged documents. By tomorrow afternoon, your parents will be locked out of their home and business, and your precious father will be facing federal fraud charges.”
My heart hammered violently against my ribs. Forged documents? A lien against my family’s livelihood?
This wasn't just a domestic dispute anymore. This was a calculated, premeditated corporate and legal ambush orchestrated by Charles and Beatrice to crush my family into submission and steal everything we owned.
I didn't yell. I didn't cry. I simply looked Beatrice dead in the eye, my voice dropping to an icy, emotionless register.
“You picked the wrong family to mess with, Beatrice.”
I turned on my heel, walked out of the emergency room into the crisp morning air, and dialed a number I had not called in months.
“Dad,” I said the moment my father answered. “It’s time.”
Within an hour, I had packed every single one of my belongings into my Honda Civic, abandoning Brandon’s house before he and his parents even returned from the hospital. I didn't leave a note. I didn't leave a forwarding address. I drove straight back to Nashville, where my father was waiting for me on the front porch of our family home—not alone, but standing beside a towering, silver-haired man wearing an expensive custom-tailored suit.
That man was Marcus Vance, senior managing partner of Vance, Sterling & Cole—the most feared corporate litigation firm in the entire state of Tennessee, and my godfather.

“Well, Clara,” Marcus greeted me with a grim, knowing smile as I stepped out of my car. “Your father told me your new husband’s family tried to pull a fraudulent lien on the property. Let’s go show these country squires how real power operates in the courtrooms of Nashville.”
