Chapter 3 - The Secret in the Safe Deposit Box**

Julian stepped back, running a hand through his hair in absolute agitation. His eyes darted to his mother, demanding an explanation. “Mom? What is Aunt Beatrice talking about? What does Clara’s college timeline have to do with any of this?”

Eleanor’s facade of fragile victimhood completely fractured, replaced by sudden, panicked fury. She glared daggers at Beatrice. “She’s lying! They’re both lying to cover up her instability! Look at the bathroom! She smashed the mirror herself in a fit of rage!”

“I didn't touch the mirror,” I whispered, my voice trembling as I finally found the strength to speak. “Your mother threw it at me when I caught her going through our private safe deposit box documents in the study.”

Julian froze. He turned sharply to his mother. “You were in our safe deposit box?”

Eleanor stammered, losing her composure entirely. “I... I was just looking for the family heirloom papers! You asked me to help organize them!”

“I never asked you to touch our private documents,” Julian said, his voice dropping an octave as the chilling reality of his mother’s intrusion finally set in.

Aunt Beatrice reached into her designer handbag, pulled out a thick manila envelope, and tossed it onto the vanity counter next to the shattered glass.

“She wasn't looking for heirloom papers, Julian,” Beatrice said coldly. “She was looking for the property deed to your grandfather’s estate—the one your grandfather left exclusively to Clara and you when he passed away last year. Eleanor had her attorney draft a fraudulent quitclaim deed weeks ago, forging Clara’s signature, trying to sign the entire multi-million-dollar property over to her own name before the baby arrives.”

The blood drained completely from Julian’s face. He stared at the envelope as if it were a venomous snake. He opened it with trembling fingers, pulling out the fraudulent documents and the notarized forgery of my signature.

“Mom... did you do this?” Julian whispered, his voice cracking with profound shock and betrayal.

Eleanor crossed her arms, her chin lifting in defiant arrogance. “I did it to protect our family! Clara is an outsider! She doesn't understand our family’s legacy! That property belongs to the Whitaker bloodline, not some girl from an ordinary background who trapped you into marriage!”

Hearing those words—after four years of trying to love her, respect her, and include her in my life—felt like a physical blow. But looking at Julian, I saw the final piece of the puzzle click into place in his mind. The lies, the manipulation, the staged drama, the fake miscarriage story—it had all been a calculated, desperate conspiracy to control our assets and alienate me before our child was born.

Julian didn't defend her. He didn't make excuses. He just stared at his mother with eyes full of a terrifying, cold realization.
