Chapter 1 - The Shattered Mirror and the Poisoned Whisper**

The sharp, metallic tang of fresh blood mingled with the familiar scent of lavender in our master bathroom as I knelt on the cold porcelain tile, my stomach heaving in violent waves of morning sickness. I was six months pregnant, exhausted to the bone, and barely able to stay upright. Just moments before, a heavy antique hand mirror had shattered violently against the side of my face, leaving a jagged, bleeding cut across my cheekbone and sending splinters of glass scattering across the floor.

I looked up, dazed and terrified, expecting my husband, Julian, to rush to my side with towels and comfort. Instead, he stood frozen in the doorway, staring down at me with an expression of sheer horror—not because I was hurt, but because of what his mother had just whispered into his ear.

“You know what she is, Julian,” Eleanor whispered, her voice laced with venomous theatricality as she hovered behind my husband like a dark shadow. “She’s unhinged. She tried to make me miscarry years ago with that toxic tea, and now... look at her. She’s going to hurt her own baby next.”

For three terrifying, agonizing seconds, the man I loved—the man I had shared my life, my dreams, and my heart with for four years—looked down at me like I was a dangerous stranger. His eyes darted from the broken glass on the floor to the blood trickling down my cheek, and for a fleeting, sickening moment, I saw hesitation in his gaze. He was actually trying to decide whether the woman carrying his child was a monster.

I couldn't even defend myself properly. My hands shook so violently I couldn't press a tissue against the cut on my face. My stomach turned inside out, and all I could do was look up at him through tear-filled eyes, praying desperately that he would remember who I was before his mother’s poison entered the room.

For years, Eleanor had quietly, systematically woven a web of subtle lies about me. She told Julian I was erratic, overly sensitive, and secretive. But tonight, she had escalated to nuclear warfare. She had fabricated an insane accusation about a miscarriage she allegedly suffered years before we even met—blaming me for poisoning her—and used it to plant the seed of fear that I would abuse our unborn child.

The part that terrified me wasn't her malicious lie.

It was how terrifyingly fast my own husband had almost believed it.
