Chapter 2 - The Text Message That Exposed the Lie**

The collective gasp that rippled through the living room sounded like a sudden intake of autumn wind. Relatives who had known Eleanor for decades exchanged bewildered, skeptical glances, shifting uncomfortably in their seats.
Eleanor lowered her hand, her jaw tightening until the muscles bulged. “You don't know what you’re talking about, Brenda. Stay out of family business.”
Aunt Brenda didn't back down. She was a retired high school principal whose sharp intellect and zero-tolerance policy for toxic drama had kept our extended family anchored for decades. She took two deliberate steps forward, her phone screen glowing in the afternoon light.
“I know exactly what I’m talking about, Eleanor, because I know who sent me a message at 8:14 a.m. on Tuesday,” Brenda replied evenly, her voice cutting through the heavy silence like a razor.
Marcus finally released my arm. I straightened up, gripping the edge of the gift table to steady my trembling knees. My shoulder throbbed, but the physical pain was entirely overshadowed by the crushing realization of how deeply my husband’s family had conspired against me.
“Mom?” Marcus finally muttered, rubbing the back of his neck in that familiar, defensive gesture he always used when he was cornered. “Did you... did you send Brenda the invitation?”
Eleanor spun around, her eyes flashing with fury at her son. “Don't start taking her side! Brenda has always been jealous of our family bond! She’s trying to poison you against me!”
“I didn't take anyone’s side, Eleanor,” Brenda interrupted, stepping closer. “I just hate being lied to. Especially when you’re using my phone to prove a lie.”
Brenda tapped her screen twice, displaying an active text thread. At the very top of the chat was Eleanor’s contact photo, followed immediately by the digital graphic of our baby-shower invitation. But above the invitation sat a series of text messages that Eleanor had clearly forgotten she sent.
“Give me that phone!” Eleanor shrieked, lunging forward like a cornered cat.
Brenda deftly pulled her phone back, turning sharply so Eleanor couldn't snatch it.
I looked at Marcus, my voice hard as ice. “What does it say, Marcus?”
Marcus froze. He looked at his aunt, then at his mother, and finally turned his terrified eyes toward me. He reached out tentatively, and Brenda crossed the remaining space, placing the glowing phone directly into my husband’s trembling hand.
I leaned over his shoulder, my eyes scanning the digital conversation.
*Eleanor (Tuesday, 8:14 AM): “Make sure you come to the shower, Brenda. I need witnesses when she finally loses her temper so Marcus can finally see how unstable she really is. We need to build the case before she files for primary custody.”*
The words hit me like a physical blow to the stomach. Custody? Build a case?
My breath hitched. I stumbled backward, gasping as the horrific reality of what Eleanor had been plotting behind my back crashed over me. She wasn't just trying to alienate me from her family—she and Marcus had been secretly consulting family attorneys, documenting every minor disagreement, and manufacturing a narrative that I was an unfit, unstable mother who needed to be separated from my unborn child.
I looked at Marcus, my voice dropping to a terrifying whisper. “You knew about this.”
Marcus dropped his head, his face turning the color of ash. “No... I mean, she was just venting, Ava! You know how my mom gets when she’s stressed—”
“She was planning to steal my baby before she was even born!” I screamed, the rage finally overriding my shock as tears streamed down my face.
Eleanor threw her hands in the air, abandoning all pretense of innocence. “Yes! Because you’re unfit! You’re cold, you’re career-obsessed, and you would raise my grandchild in a disaster of a home! My son deserves a real mother for his child, not an icy corporate drone!”

Before anyone else could react, Aunt Brenda stepped between us, her face a mask of furious righteous indignation. “Get out of this house, Eleanor. Right now. Or I’ll call the police and have you arrested for assault.”
