Chapter 1 - The Slap on the Gift Table**

The warm, cheerful air of our living room was supposed to be filled with the joyous laughter of family, pastel balloons, and the sweet anticipation of welcoming our first child. Pastel pink and white streamers draped gracefully across the ceiling, gift bags overflowing with tiny knitted cardigans and plush animals sat neatly on the center table, and my mother-in-law, Eleanor, sat near the front row wearing a tight, artificial smile that never quite reached her cold eyes. For months, I had excused her passive-aggressive remarks, her unannounced visits, and her constant hovering as the anxious excitement of a first-time grandmother. But today, the fragile mask shattered into a million pieces.

Without warning, Eleanor stood up, crossed the floor with shocking speed, and delivered a sharp, vicious slap across my left cheek that echoed like a pistol shot through the crowded room.

My head snapped sideways, a burst of blinding heat exploding across my face. I stumbled backward, my heavily pregnant body losing balance as my hip slammed hard against the sharp edge of the wrapped gift table. A bruised shoulder from a clumsy fall the week prior throbbed in agony, and I nearly crashed onto the pile of presents.

Before I could hit the floor, my husband, Marcus, lunged forward—not to intercept his mother, not to shield his pregnant wife, but to grab my arm tightly, steadying me just enough to keep me upright while his eyes darted nervously toward Eleanor.

The room went dead silent. The rustling of tissue paper stopped instantly. Relatives froze mid-sentence, staring in absolute horror at the red handprint blooming across my skin.

“You ungrateful, manipulative little liar!” Eleanor shrieked, her voice trembling with manufactured outrage as she pointed a manicured finger directly at my face. “You’ve been secretly planning to keep me away from my grandchild all along! You think you can cut me out of this family just because you’re carrying a baby? I saw right through your games!”

My breath caught in my throat. Tears of shock and burning humiliation welled in my eyes, but I refused to let her break me. I touched my throbbing cheek, looking straight at Marcus, whose fingers were still clamped around my arm like a vice grip.

“Marcus,” I whispered, my voice shaking with raw betrayal. “Tell her.”

Marcus didn't look at me. His gaze remained locked on his mother, his shoulders tense, his body language screaming the posture of a man waiting for parental permission to speak. He didn't demand an apology for the assault. He didn't pull me into his arms. He stood there like a frightened child caught between two feuding factions.

That was the moment the floor dropped out from under my marriage. The slap hurt my skin, but watching my husband look to his mother for instructions destroyed my soul.

Before Marcus could choke out a cowardly excuse, a sharp, clear voice rang out from the back row of folding chairs.

“That’s strange,” Aunt Brenda said, stepping smoothly into the aisle. She held her smartphone up like a shield. “Your mother sent me the exact baby-shower invitation she claims you banned her from, Eleanor. In fact, she’s been texting me all week complaining about how terribly you treat her—yet she’s the one who sent me this message.”

Eleanor’s face instantly drained of color. The triumphant smirk vanished, replaced by sudden, frantic panic.
