Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary Ward**

The sterile white corridors of St. Jude’s Medical Center hummed with quiet urgency as I sprinted through the double doors of the orthopedic recovery ward, flanked by Jax and two federal agents. My heart hammered against my ribs with a ferocity I hadn't felt since my first firefight overseas.
Room 412.
The door was unlocked. When I pushed it open, the breath caught entirely in my throat.
Emily lay propped up in the adjustable hospital bed, her pale face bruised and etched with deep exhaustion. Both of her legs were encased in heavy plaster casts suspended from traction frames above the mattress. She looked so fragile, like a delicate bird caught in a trap, but when her tired eyes fluttered open and locked onto mine, a ragged sob broke from her lips.
“Blake...” she whispered, her voice trembling.
I crossed the room in two strides, falling to my knees beside her bed and gently gathering her into my arms, careful not to jostle her injured legs. She buried her face in my shoulder, clinging to me as if she were afraid I would vanish like a mirage.
“I’m here, baby,” I choked out, pressing my lips to her hair as tears finally broke free from my eyes. “I’m right here. No one is ever going to hurt you again. I swear it on my life.”
“They said... they said if I testified against Cameron, they would come back,” she cried softly, her fingers gripping the fabric of my uniform jacket. “Sheriff Cole came to my room yesterday. He told me no one would ever believe an injured woman over a billionaire’s son.”
A cold, lethal fury settled deep into my bones. Cameron Voss had crossed a line that could never be uncrossed. He hadn't just attacked my wife; he had declared war on my family, thinking our quiet life in Virginia meant we had no protection.
Behind me, the door opened quietly, and a tall, silver-haired man in a bespoke charcoal suit stepped into the room. It was Special Agent Richard Vance of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Public Corruption Unit—and Marcus Hale’s direct civilian liaison.
“Captain Dean,” Agent Vance greeted me respectfully, stepping closer to the bed. “I’m glad you made it back safely. Your wife’s medical security has been upgraded to federal witness protection level. No local law enforcement will ever set foot in this building again.”
I gently set Emily back against her pillows, wiping the tears from her cheeks, before standing up to face the federal agent.
“What do you have on Cameron Voss and Sheriff Cole?” I asked, my voice dropping an octave into a dangerous register.
Agent Vance opened a thick manila folder, sliding several pages of financial records and wiretap transcripts onto the bedside tray.
“We’ve been building a RICO case against Richard Voss and his son Cameron for eighteen months,” Vance explained grimly. “They’ve laundered millions through local real estate development projects, using Sheriff Cole’s department as their private enforcers to silence witnesses, intimidate judges, and cover up violent assaults. Cameron thought he was untouchable because his father bought half the county council.”
“He’s not untouchable,” I replied, staring at a photograph of Cameron smiling arrogantly outside a local country club. “He’s just unaware that his timer has run out.”
Agent Vance looked into my eyes for a long moment, reading the icy determination burning within them. Then, he closed the folder.

“The federal raid on the Voss estate is scheduled for 0400 hours tomorrow,” Vance said quietly. “General Hale authorized Ghost Squad to participate as civilian tactical consultants under federal deputization. Let’s go dismantle an empire.”
