Chapter 1 - The Terminal Ambush**

The heavy commercial transport shuddered as its landing gear slammed onto the tarmac of Richmond International Airport, the screech of rubber echoing through the quiet pre-dawn gloom. Fourteen hours earlier, halfway across the globe inside a dimly lit tactical command tent, I had listened in helpless horror as my wife Emily’s screams were cut short by the sickening sound of breaking bones and the arrogant laughter of a privileged coward who believed his family owned the entire state of Virginia.

My name is Blake Dean. For twelve years, I buried the darkest, most violent aspects of my service with the Ghost Squad, keeping that brutal world meticulously walled off from Emily, a gentle, kind-hearted teacher who brought light into my life. But last night, that war was dragged directly into our suburban home.

As the plane taxied toward the gate, my cell phone buzzed violently in my palm. The first notification was a brief medical update from St. Jude’s hospital confirming Emily had survived a grueling six-hour orthopedic surgery to stabilize both of her shattered legs. The second notification was an anonymous MMS text message.

I tapped the screen. It was a high-resolution photograph taken from the hallway outside Emily’s hospital room door, showing a burly man in plainclothes standing guard. Beneath the photo was a mocking text:

*WELCOME HOME, SOLDIER. SHE’S SLEEPING SOUNDLY. DON'T KEEP HER WAITING.*

Across the aisle, Master Sergeant Jax Vance, my brother-in-arms and longtime Ghost Squad teammate, leaned forward out of his seat, his sharp eyes instantly catching the shift in my posture.

“Problem, Blake?” Jax asked, his voice low and devoid of fear, radiating the lethal calm of a seasoned operator.

I tilted the screen toward him. Jax studied the image, his jaw muscles clenching until a vein throbbed on his temple.

“They’re tracking our landing time,” Jax muttered, scanning the cabin. “That means local law enforcement is compromised all the way up to airport security.”

I looked out the thick glass window of the airplane cabin as the aircraft finally aligned with the jet bridge. Parked illegally right on the restricted tarmac alongside the emergency vehicles were two local sheriff’s cruisers, their amber light bars flashing silently in the damp morning air. Two deputies leaned against the doors, smoking cigarettes and staring directly at the cabin door, waiting for me to step off the plane.

They hadn't even given me time to clear customs. Cameron Voss and Sheriff Nathan Cole thought they could intimidate a combat veteran on his home turf by meeting him with local badges. They severely underestimated who was coming off that plane.

“Ghost Squad,” I whispered into our encrypted comms channel to the three veterans seated behind us. “We move together. No local interference.”

As the cabin door hissed open and passengers began standing to retrieve their overhead luggage, the air in the aisle grew thick with tension. We weren't just returning soldiers anymore; we were a precision strike unit walking into an ambush set up by a corrupt billionaire’s son.
