Chapter 9 - The Collapse

Explosions ripped through the concrete corridors of the Volkov compound like a rolling chain of thunder.

Dust, debris, and smoke filled the air as Lorenzo sprinted toward the drainage tunnel exit, shielding Elena with his own body while the girls provided suppressing fire behind them with customized tactical sub-machine guns that fired non-lethal, high-impact rubber rounds.

"Almost there!" Maya shouted over the roar of collapsing masonry, tapping furiously on her detonator. "Triggering secondary charges in three... two... one!"

*KABOOM!*

A massive shockwave blew out the entire rear facade of the Bratva estate, burying Dmitri Volkov’s primary command center under thousands of tons of snow, ice, and shattered concrete.

Silence descended upon the frozen taiga, broken only by the crackle of burning timber and the heavy panting of the escaping team.

Crawling out of the narrow drainage pipe into the freezing night air, the family collapsed into the snowbanks behind their transport van.

Elena pulled all five girls into her arms, laughing and crying simultaneously as Lorenzo stood guard over them, scanning the tree line with his rifle raised, a rare, genuine smile pulling at the corners of his mouth.

"Are you insane?!" Elena scolded affectionately, kissing the top of Maya's head. "You could have been killed!"

"Statistically, our survival rate was ninety-four point six percent," Maya replied deadpan, adjusting her tactical goggles. "And besides, we got you back."

Lorenzo lowered his weapon, walking over to them and kneeling in the snow. He looked at Elena, then at his five little demons, realizing that his cold, ruthless empire had just been completely, beautifully upended by five seven-year-old masterminds.

"Get in the van," Lorenzo said, his voice warm with a fierce, unbreakable pride. "We're going home."
