Chapter 3 - The Secret in the Penthouse Nursery

The private safehouse penthouse on the forty-eighth floor of the Lupari Tower was completely secure, shielded from wiretaps, satellite scans, and uninvited guests. Yet, the atmosphere inside was thick with a volatile, ticking tension.

Mara paced back and forth across the white marble floor, her heels clicking angrily. Her children were safely asleep in the adjoining guest suite under the watchful eye of her trusted nanny, but she knew time was running out. Dario was too smart, too observant. He had already noticed the uncanny resemblance in Leo’s eyes.

Suddenly, the biometric security lock on the private elevator chimed.

*Click. Whir.*

The heavy steel doors slid open silently.

Dario Lupari walked into the penthouse alone, shedding his suit jacket and tossing it onto the sofa. He didn't look like a mob boss negotiating a hostile takeover; he looked like a predator who had finally cornered his prey after a grueling hunt.

"You have twenty guards outside the lobby, and your lawyers are threatening an injunction," Dario said calmly, walking toward the wet bar to pour two glasses of bourbon. He didn't offer one to her; he simply placed it on the glass coffee table. "Yet you didn't leave the hotel. Why, Mara? Because deep down, you knew running was useless."

Mara stopped pacing. She turned to face him, crossing her arms defensively. "I didn't run because I was scared of you, Dario. I ran because you belong to a world that destroys everything it touches. I refused to let my life—or my children's lives—become collateral damage in your endless syndicate wars."

Dario froze. The glass in his hand stopped halfway to his mouth. His silver eyes dilated, locking onto her with laser-like precision.

"Your... children?" Dario whispered, every syllable dropping into the quiet room like a lead weight. "Plural?"

Mara realized too late she had slipped. Her face paled slightly, but she refused to back down. "Yes. Twins. A boy and a girl. Born seven months after I left."

Dario set the glass down so hard the crystal cracked. He closed the distance between them in three long, terrifying strides, grabbing her by the shoulders. His touch wasn't rough, but it was unyielding, vibrating with raw, unfiltered emotion.

"Mine?" he demanded, his voice cracking slightly on the edge of a desperate plea. "Are they mine, Mara?"

Before Mara could find the voice to answer, a soft click echoed from the hallway.

The door to the guest suite pushed open, and little Leo stepped out, rubbing his eyes sleepily. He wore striped pajamas, his dark hair messy from sleep. He blinked against the bright lights of the penthouse, looking up at the towering, intimidating figure of the man standing next to his mother.

Dario slowly released Mara’s shoulders. He turned around, his gaze falling upon the little boy.

When Leo blinked again, looking directly into Dario’s face, the entire room seemed to stop spinning. The exact same piercing, silver-gray eyes stared back at Dario from the face of a seven-year-old child.

Dario’s breath caught in his throat. He dropped slowly to one knee, staring at the boy in stunned, breathless silence.
