Chapter 2 - The Stolen Blueprint and the Public Trap

The grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel was packed to capacity for the annual Chicago Chamber of Commerce Gala. Billionaires, politicians, and syndicate capos mingled under glittering crystal chandeliers, sipping champagne and trading quiet favors.

When the mahogany doors swung open and Mara Vance entered on the arm of her senior partner, the entire room gasped.

She moved with an effortless, breathtaking grace, her cream suit contrasting sharply with the sea of black tuxedos and red evening gowns. But it wasn't her beauty that made the room freeze; it was the sheer audacity of her presence. Everyone in Chicago knew the Lupari family had been hunting her for years, and here she was, walking straight into the lion's den.

Across the ballroom, standing near the VIP bar, Dario Lupari stopped breathing.

He looked older, harder, and infinitely more dangerous than he had eight years ago. Dressed in a bespoke midnight-black tuxedo, his broad shoulders and predatory stance commanded the room. When his silver eyes locked onto Mara’s face across the crowded floor, the air seemed to leave his lungs.

Mara felt the weight of his gaze instantly. Her breath hitched, and her pulse hammered frantically against her ribs like a trapped bird. For a fraction of a second, her composure wavered. But she forced her chin up, locking her eyes onto his with an icy, unyielding shield of absolute defiance.

Before Dario could cross the room to reach her, a slimy, familiar voice slithered from the side.

"Well, well, if it isn't the little runaway," purred Julian Vance—her treacherous ex-fiancé, who had somehow managed to claw his way into a minor consultancy role under the Lupari umbrella. Julian grinned maliciously, blocking her path with a glass of scotch in his hand. "I heard you went bankrupt in Europe, Mara. Did you finally crawl back to sell yourself to the highest bidder?"

Mara didn't blink. She looked at Julian the way a scientist might look at a particularly foul insect. "Step aside, Julian. You're standing in the draft of someone much more important than you will ever be."

"You arrogant little—" Julian snarled, his face turning red with rage as he raised his hand, threatening to knock her glass away.

Before his fingers could even graze her sleeve, a massive, calloused hand clamped around Julian’s wrist with the crushing force of a vice grip.

Julian shrieked, dropping his glass as it shattered on the marble floor. He spun around, expecting security, and found himself staring directly into the terrifying, dead-cold silver eyes of Dario Lupari.

"Mr. Vance," Dario’s voice was a low, velvet growl that vibrated through the entire floor, silencing the surrounding chatter instantly. "In my world, men who raise their hands in the presence of a lady lose them. Security—escort this piece of garbage out of my sight before I forget I'm in public."

Two massive enforcers materialized instantly, grabbing Julian by the collar and dragging him away while he whimpered in terror.

Dario didn't look at the retreating man. His gaze snapped back to Mara, intense, hungry, and burning with a dark, unresolved fury.

"You've been very hard to find, Mara," Dario whispered, stepping close enough that she could feel the heat radiating off his chest, inhaling the familiar scent of cedar and gunpowder. "And you left a few things behind."

Mara’s heart hammered, but her voice remained chillingly steady. "I don't know what you're talking about, Dario. I'm here for a corporate buyout, nothing more."

May you like

"Is that so?" Dario murmured, his eyes dropping briefly to her handbag before rising back to meet her fierce gaze. "We’ll see how long you can maintain that lie when my lawyers—and my blood—catch up to you."
