Chapter 3 - The Corporate Blitzkrieg

The war didn't begin in the dark alleys or underground warehouses; it began in the harsh fluorescent light of the Manhattan municipal zoning office and across the financial trading floors of Wall Street.
Within forty-eight hours of the Metropolitan Gala, the corporate landscape of New York shifted with seismic violence.
Elena sat behind the executive mahogany desk of her newly minted firm—*Aegis Architecture & Design*—located on the fifty-fifth floor of the Moretti Tower, overlooking the entire Hudson River. The office was expansive, sleek, and completely funded by the infinite capital reserves of the Moretti syndicate.
Her phone buzzed continuously on the sleek glass surface.
Her lead acquisition attorney, a shark named Marcus Vance (no relation to Julian), leaned against the windowsill with a triumphant grin.
"It's working, Mrs. Moretti," Marcus said, tossing a thick dossier onto her desk. "We executed phase one of your blueprint. By utilizing Moretti-backed shell corporations, we quietly bought up the underlying mortgage notes of the three primary suppliers Julian's firm relies on for the Hudson waterfront project. We called in the debts this morning."
Elena didn't look up from her architectural schematics. "And?"
"And Vance Development is currently facing an immediate liquidity crisis," Marcus chuckled. "Their steel shipments have been canceled, their concrete contractors have walked off the site, and the city board is threatening to pull their permits for breach of timeline."
Just as he finished speaking, the heavy wooden doors of her private office flew open without a knock.
Julian Vance stood in the doorway. He looked entirely unraveled. His hair was messy, his tie was loosened, and the expensive Brioni suit he had worn to the gala now looked wrinkled and worn. His face was flushed with blind, incandescent rage.
"What the hell do you think you're pulling, Elena?!" Julian roared, storming across the plush carpet until he reached her desk. He slammed his fists down onto the glass, glaring at her with wild eyes. "You bought out our supply chain? You coordinated a hostile credit freeze with three major banking institutions in less than forty-eight hours? Are you insane?!"
Elena slowly laid down her drafting pen, leaning back in her leather executive chair. She looked at him the way an entomologist might study an irritating insect pinned to a board.
"Lower your voice, Julian," Elena said, her tone level and chillingly polite. "You're standing in a Moretti-owned building. If security has to remove you, they won't use stairs."
Julian sneered, his chest heaving. "You think you're untouchable just because you married a criminal? You think playing mob wife makes you a CEO? You stole my designs! You ruined my project!"
"I didn't steal anything, Julian," Elena replied, standing up slowly and walking around the desk until she stood mere inches away from him. "Every sketch, every structural calculation, every zoning strategy for the Hudson project was filed under my independent patent registration before you and Chloe ever laid eyes on them. You didn't build an empire; you built a house of cards on stolen property."
"I will sue you into oblivion!" Julian snarled, his face twisting in fury. "I'll expose Moretti's syndicate ties to the federal prosecutors! I'll ruin you!"
The office door opened again silently.
Dante Moretti stepped into the room, sliding his hands casually into his trouser pockets. He didn't raise his voice, but the entire temperature in the room dropped ten degrees.
"Go ahead, Vance," Dante said softly, stepping up beside Elena and resting a heavy hand on her shoulder. "File your lawsuits. Call the feds. Let's see how fast the SEC investigates the fraudulent corporate shell accounts you used to embezzle three million dollars from your own firm's pension fund last year."
Julian went completely rigid. The color drained from his face, leaving him looking ghost-white.
"How... how do you know about that?" Julian whispered, his voice trembling.
"In my line of work, Vance, people talk," Dante replied, his silver eyes flashing with cold menace. "And your accountants talk very loudly when their offshore bank accounts are frozen by my associates in the Cayman Islands. You're finished, Julian. The only question left is whether you want to spend the next ten years in federal prison or pack your bags and leave New York before sunset."

Julian looked between Dante’s terrifying calm and Elena’s absolute, unyielding ice. The fight completely drained out of him. He stumbled backward, turned blindly toward the doors, and fled down the hallway without another word.
