Chapter 2 - The Grand Reintroduction at the Metropolitan Gala

Three weeks later, the grand ballroom of the Metropolitan Museum of Art was glittering under millions of dollars in crystal chandeliers, echoing with the soft laughter of New York’s elite. It was the annual Autumn Preservation Gala—the exact society event where Julian Vance and Chloe Sterling intended to officially announce their corporate merger and upcoming wedding.
Julian stood near the champagne tower in a bespoke Brioni tuxedo, playing the part of the visionary young billionaire architect, while Chloe clung to his arm like a trophy, draped in a backless crimson silk gown and dripping with heirloom sapphires.
"Look at them, Julian," Chloe purred, sipping her champagne as she watched the society photographers circle the room. "The architectural commission for the Hudson waterfront development was officially approved by the city council this morning. By next year, the Vance name will be permanently etched into the skyline."
"And Elena is probably working double shifts at some diner in Queens trying to pay her rent," Julian laughed softly, swirling his drink with effortless arrogance. "Some people are simply built to serve, Chloe. They don't belong in our world."
Suddenly, the ambient chatter in the grand ballroom began to die down. A heavy, unnatural hush rippled outward from the grand double doors at the entrance of the hall. The string quartet faltered for a fraction of a second.
All heads turned toward the foyer.
Striding through the entryway with absolute, unyielding command was Dante Moretti.
Gasps echoed through the crowd. Men stepped aside instinctively, clearing a wide, respectful path before him, while women stared in breathless awe and nervous apprehension. Dante wore a midnight-blue velvet tuxedo, looking every bit the dangerous sovereign of the underworld.
But it wasn't Dante who made the room stop breathing.
It was the woman on his arm.
Elena Vance—now Elena Moretti—wore a custom-made, backless gown spun from liquid silver silk that seemed to catch every beam of light in the room. Her dark hair was styled in sleek, cascading waves, her makeup was bold and flawless, and resting high upon her left ring finger flashed the unmistakable, blinding brilliance of the Moretti emerald ring.
Julian’s glass slipped from his fingers, shattering against the marble floor with a sharp crack that echoed across the silent hall.
Chloe’s jaw dropped so low she looked physically ill, her manicured nails digging deep into Julian’s sleeve.
"What... what is she doing here?" Chloe stammered, her voice shaking with sudden, blind panic. "Who invited her? And how does she have a Moretti ring?"
Julian didn't answer. His face had turned the color of ash. He stared across the ballroom as Elena lifted her chin, locking her cold, unwavering gaze directly onto his eyes. There was no pain in her expression anymore—only a sharp, glittering promise of absolute destruction.
Dante wrapped a protective, possessive arm around Elena’s waist, guiding her smoothly past the stunned crowds toward the center of the dais where the city's most powerful financiers and politicians were gathered.
As they passed Julian and Chloe, Elena didn't even slow down. She simply turned her head slightly, offering Julian a glacial, pitying smile.
"Good evening, Julian," Elena said, her voice carrying effortlessly across the quiet room. "I hope you're enjoying the party. You're going to need all the distractions you can get."
Before Julian could recover his voice, Dante leaned down, his silver-gray eyes boring into Julian's terrified face like drills.
"I heard you like building things, Vance," Dante said softly, every word dripping with lethal ice. "Let's see how long your foundation holds when the ground starts shaking beneath your feet."

With that, Dante led Elena onward toward the head table, leaving the social elite whispering behind their hands, while Julian stood frozen in a nightmare he could neither wake up from nor escape.
