Chapter 3 - The Detective’s Grid**

Within the hour, the grand estate was swarming with forensic investigators, homicide detectives, and crime scene technicians in white jumpsuits. Flashing red and blue cruiser lights painted the pristine lawns in an eerie, pulsing glow, drawing clusters of curious neighbors to the outer wrought-iron gates. Inside, the foyer had been cordoned off with yellow police tape, transforming the luxurious family home into a high-security crime scene.
Detective Miller, a veteran homicide investigator with cold, calculating eyes, stood near the breached wall holding a digital tablet. He looked from the gruesome cavity in the drywall to the weeping father, and then down at the two children sitting safely on a velvet sofa under the care of a paramedic.
"Mr. Vance," Detective Miller said quietly, stepping close so the children wouldn't overhear. "The medical examiner has preliminary confirmation. The remains match dental records and DNA markers of your late wife, Emily Vance. She never left the country. She never abandoned you. She was murdered right here in this house, on the exact night she supposedly packed her bags."
Father felt his knees buckle, and he caught himself against a mahogany side table, gasping for breath as the floor seemed to drop out from beneath him. All the memories of the night Emily disappeared flooded back—the sudden storm, the renovations the new stepmother had insisted upon doing in the hallway just days after Emily's 'departure', the strange, lingering scent of damp earth that had haunted the air for weeks. He had been so blind, so desperate for comfort after her sudden disappearance, that he had welcomed the fox right into the henhouse.
Across the room, the stepmother—whose real name was revealed to be Vanessa Thorne, a woman with a long history of financial fraud and alias changes—was being led out to a waiting squad car. She glared at Father with pure, unadulterated hatred, her lips curled into a vicious snarl.
"You think you’ve won?" she screamed over the wailing sirens, her voice echoing off the stone facade. "You’ll never find all of it! The accounts are locked, the properties are in my name, and your precious children saw too much! You're all ruined!"

Detective Miller watched her leave with a dismissive glance before turning back to Father. "Don't mind her, Mr. Vance. People like that always think they're the smartest person in the room until the cell door slams shut. But she's right about one thing—we need to tear this entire house apart. If she was capable of sealing a body inside a structural wall, God only knows what else she hid in this estate."
