Chapter 4 - The Midnight Summons

By 7:00 AM the next morning, the digital fallout hit the financial news networks.

*“Breaking Financial Alert: Sterling Holdings, one of the region’s largest commercial real estate conglomerates, has announced an unexpected freezing of primary capital accounts following a sudden probate injunction filed by the Sterling Estate Trust.”*

The news anchor’s voice droned on in the background while I sat at the kitchen island, helping Leo spread butter on his toast.

The doorbell rang.

It wasn't the mailman, and it wasn't a delivery driver. Through the frosted glass of our front door, I could see the sharp silhouette of two men in bespoke Italian suits.

I walked over, unlatched the deadbolt, and pulled the door open.

Standing on the porch was Marcus Sterling—Eleanor’s eldest surviving son and Julian’s father. He looked disheveled, his silk tie crooked, dark circles bruised beneath his eyes. Behind him stood corporate counsel for Sterling Holdings, a high-priced lawyer named Sterling Vance who usually charged a thousand dollars an hour just to answer an email.

“Clara,” Marcus rasped, his voice tight with barely contained desperation. “We need to talk.”

“Good morning, Marcus,” I said calmly, not moving an inch to invite them inside. “You look like you didn't sleep well.”

“Don't play games with me,” Marcus hissed, taking a step forward before the corporate lawyer gently placed a restraining hand on his arm. Marcus swallowed hard, forcing a tight, pleading grimace onto his face. “Look, Mother is old. She gets confused. That document you waved around last night... it’s clearly an old draft Arthur drew up during a moment of cognitive decline. We can settle this privately. Name your price. Five hundred thousand? A million? We’ll wire it to your personal account today.”

I looked at him with quiet pity. He really thought everything could be bought, just like his mother believed everything could be commanded.

“A million dollars, Marcus?” I asked softly. “That’s funny. Considering that under the fourth codicil you’re trying to invalidate, your entire corporate salary, your downtown penthouse, and your vintage car collection legally transferred to my four-year-old son at midnight.”

Marcus’s face flushed a violent, ugly shade of red. “You greedy little—! You think you can steal our entire legacy over a petty family squabble? I’ll sue you into the Stone Age! I’ll strip you of custody! I’ll—!”

“You’ll do nothing,” a calm, authoritative voice interrupted from the driveway.

We all turned to see two county sheriff’s deputies stepping out of a cruiser parked behind Marcus’s Mercedes, accompanied by a court bailiff holding a thick stack of manila folders.

“Marcus Sterling?” the lead deputy asked, stepping up onto the porch. “You’re being served with a temporary restraining order barring you from approaching the Sterling Estate primary commercial offices, effective immediately, pursuant to a court-ordered asset restructuring.”

Marcus stared at the deputy in stunned disbelief, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water.

May you like

I closed the front door gently in their faces, locked the deadbolt, and walked back to the kitchen to finish breakfast with my son.
