Chapter 3 - The Audit of Greed

The heavy oak doors of the Sterling ancestral home swung shut behind me as I walked out into the cool autumn night, leaving the dining hall in a state of absolute, paralyzed panic.
Martha was waiting by the black sedan with Leo asleep in her arms, his head resting peacefully against her shoulder.
“Is everything alright, ma'am?” Martha asked, her eyes searching my face in the dim amber light of the driveway.
“Everything is exactly where it needs to be, Martha,” I said quietly, opening the car door for them. “The foundation is shifting. And the people who built their house on sand are about to find out what happens when the tide comes in.”
We drove back to our modest, sunlit home across town—a quiet place my late husband, David, had purchased before his tragic accident. It wasn't a sprawling mansion with stone gargoyles and ancestral portraits, but it was filled with warmth, laughter, and genuine love.
Once Leo was tucked safely into his bed, I sat at my home office desk and opened my laptop.
Within five minutes, my phone rang. The caller ID flashed a private extension: Judge Harrison.
“Clara?” the elderly, distinguished voice came through the receiver. “I received the emergency notification ping from your legal portal. Did you present the fourth codicil to Eleanor?”
“I did, Judge,” I replied, resting my elbows on the desk. “Her reaction was precisely what you predicted. Total denial followed by immediate panic.”
“She has no legal ground to contest it,” Judge Harrison said firmly. “Arthur anticipated her greed. He knew she and Julian’s branch of the family would attempt to rewrite the family lineage the moment he passed away. That’s why he structured the forfeiture clause to execute automatically upon any documented act of psychological exclusion or physical maltreatment.”
“And the financial audit?” I asked.
“It’s already underway,” Harrison answered. “As of the moment Eleanor assaulted your son with that serving tray tonight, the automated asset transfer protocols triggered at midnight. Sterling Holdings’ primary commercial accounts are currently freezing pending redistribution verification.”
I closed my eyes for a fraction of a second, letting out a long, steady breath. David, if you’re watching from somewhere, your final insurance policy just protected our boy.

“Keep me updated, Judge,” I said. “The real battle is only just beginning.”
