Chapter 3 - The Railway Canopy

The wind whipped viciously through the concrete arches of the abandoned railway terminal on the edge of the industrial district, carrying the bitter scent of soot and freezing rain.
Arthur’s private black town car glided silently to a halt right at the edge of the platform, its headlights cutting through the swirling darkness. Before the driver could even put the vehicle in park, Arthur threw open the door and stepped out into the biting cold.
Leo hopped out right behind him, clutching a warm wool blanket Claire had insisted on packing.
"Mom!" Leo called out, his young voice echoing against the vaulted brick pillars. "Mom, I found him! I found Mr. Harrison!"
Underneath the deepest shadow of the rusted iron canopy, a small, fragile figure huddled beneath a thin, wet plaid blanket stirred. A woman with dark hair matted against her pale forehead and eyes sunken with illness lifted her head slowly.
"Leo...?" she whispered, her voice a fragile rasp. "Did... did you find him, sweetheart?"
Arthur froze in his tracks. As the car’s headlights illuminated the woman’s face, the years melted away. Despite the hollow cheeks, the illness, and the dirt, the face looking back at him was unmistakably that of his estranged daughter, Sarah—the girl he had disowned twenty-five years ago for refusing to marry into the corporate dynasty he had spent his life building.
"Sarah..." Arthur breathed, his voice breaking as he rushed forward, dropping to his knees beside the cardboard pallet.
Sarah blinked, tears finally spilling over her lashes as she looked into her father’s weathered face. "Dad... I'm sorry. I tried so hard... I didn't want to come back like this. But Leo... Leo needed a future."
"Hush, child. Don't talk," Arthur choked out, his eyes wet with unhedged tears as he wrapped his heavy wool overcoat around her shivering frame. "You're home. You're both home."

He signaled frantically to his driver, who was already running over with a medical kit and a heated transport blanket. Within minutes, the mother and son were bundled into the back of the warm luxury sedan, speeding away from the desolate station toward the finest private hospital in Manhattan.
