Chapter 2 - Echoes from the Past

The silence that fell over The Midnight Spoon was absolute. Even Frank stopped breathing, his mouth hanging open as he stared back and forth between the old billionaire and the ragged boy.

Claire, the young waitress who had stood paralyzed by guilt near the pie display, instinctively stepped forward, her hands clasped tightly together. She could see the profound, devastating shock washing over Arthur’s face. The harsh, unyielding patriarch of the Harrison family looked as though he had just been struck by lightning.

"Sarah..." Arthur whispered the name like a long-forgotten prayer, a word he hadn't allowed himself to speak aloud in over twenty years.

He moved with a sudden, urgent speed that startled Frank, rounding the counter and dropping to one knee so he was eye-level with the young boy. Arthur’s weathered hands, usually steady as a surgeon's, shook as he reached out, gently grasping Leo’s small, cold shoulders.

"Where is she, Leo?" Arthur asked, his voice thick with a raw, desperate emotion that shocked even himself. "Where is your mother?"

Leo looked down at the floor, a shadow of deep exhaustion crossing his young face. "She's... she's back at the old railway station, under the shelter canopy. She told me to stay on the bus until the very last stop, and to find this diner. She said her father would be here, or at least someone who knew him."

Arthur stood up instantly, his eyes flashing with fierce resolve. He didn't look at Frank. He didn't care about the diner, the ledger, or the late-night shift.

"Claire," Arthur commanded, not breaking his gaze from the boy.

"Yes, Mr. Harrison?" Claire stepped forward immediately, her voice steady and eager to help.

"Lock the front door. Flip the sign. Get coat number four from the back office and wrap it around this boy," Arthur ordered, already reaching into his deep overcoat pocket to pull out a heavy leather wallet. He pulled out a thick stack of hundred-dollar bills and tossed them onto the counter in front of Frank. "That’s for your trouble, Frank. Consider yourself fired effective immediately. Clean out your locker by dawn."

"Mr. Harrison, wait—" Frank started, but Arthur had already turned his attention back to Leo.

"Show me where she is, son," Arthur said softly, resting a warm, heavy hand on the boy's head. "We’re going to bring your mother home."
