Chapter 7 - The Confession on Stage

The auditorium was packed to capacity. Every student, teacher, and administrator sat in tense, suffocating silence under the dim amber glow of the stage lights.
Principal Sterling—Chloe’s uncle—stood at the podium, looking visibly shaken as he tried to calm the restless murmurs rippling through the rows of velvet seats.
I walked down the center aisle, taking a seat in the very front row, right under the glare of the spotlight.
Behind me, Chloe sat huddled between two empty seats, her face buried in her hands. Madison Cruz was nowhere to be seen—she had fled the campus ten minutes earlier, unable to face what was coming.
Principal Sterling tapped the microphone. "Quiet, please. We are... we are addressing an administrative anomaly this morning regarding the... the return of Miss Vance."
Before the principal could finish stumbling through his scripted cover-up, the side door of the stage creaked open.
Madison Cruz walked out from the wings.
She wasn't holding a script. Her face was pale, devoid of makeup, and her hands shook violently as she walked straight past Principal Sterling, reached out, and took the microphone from the stand.
"Madison, what are you doing?" Principal Sterling hissed, stepping toward her. "Step away from the mic immediately."
Madison ignored him. She looked out over the sea of hundreds of terrified, staring students. Her voice trembled, amplified by the heavy speakers across the auditorium.
"I need to tell the truth," Madison said into the microphone, her voice breaking on the first syllable. "For two weeks, we lied. We all lied."
A collective gasp swept through the auditorium.
"Emma Vance didn't commit suicide," Madison continued, tears streaming freely down her face now. "On the night of October 14th, Chloe Sterling, Lucas Vance, and I cornered her in the west stairwell. We threatened to destroy her reputation, and when she tried to get away... Chloe pushed her. And then we made up a story about a breakup to cover it up because we were afraid of getting caught."
Chaos erupted in the auditorium. Students stood up shouting, teachers scrambled toward the aisles, and Principal Sterling lunged forward to cut the microphone cable.
Too late. The digital feed was already broadcasting live across every student's phone via the campus Wi-Fi network.
I sat calmly in the front row, looking back up at the stage.
Lucas bolted from his seat in the middle row, screaming curses as he ran toward the side exit, but two campus security guards—alerted by the federal prosecutor's standing orders—intercepted him at the doorway, slamming his hands against the wall and clicking steel cuffs around his wrists.
Chloe slumped completely out of her seat, sliding down into the row in front of me until she was curled in a fetal position, sobbing hysterically.

I stood up slowly, adjusted my blazer, and walked out of the auditorium into the quiet sunlight of the courtyard.
