Chapter 2 - The Return of the Dead

The morning air of St. Jude’s campus smelled of manicured lawns, expensive cologne, and absolute, unchecked privilege.

I pulled the hood of my wool coat down over my forehead as I walked through the wrought-iron gates, my heart pounding a steady, rhythmic tattoo against my ribs. Around me, groups of wealthy teenagers laughed by their luxury sedans, sipping iced lattes from the campus café.

Nobody noticed me at first. To them, Emma had been gone for two weeks—recovering in a psychiatric clinic upstate, according to the official school newsletter circulated by the administration to sweep the scandal under the rug.

Then I stepped under the shadow of the main courtyard archway.

The chatter died away.

Chloe Sterling, queen bee of the junior class and the girl whose manicured fingernails had shoved my sister toward the edge, stopped dead in her tracks near the stone fountain. Her pearl necklace slipped from her fingers, clinking against the rim of the basin.

Beside her stood Madison Cruz, holding her phone frozen mid-scroll, her jaw dropping so fast I thought it might unhinge.

And a few yards away, leaning against a black BMW with his hands shoved casually into his pockets, stood Lucas Vance.

Lucas looked up. When his eyes met mine, his golden-boy smirk vanished as if someone had punched him directly in the stomach. He pushed off the car, taking an involuntary step backward, his face turning the color of skim milk.

"E-Emma?" Chloe whispered, her voice carrying across the silent courtyard like a cracking branch. "No... that's impossible. You're... you're supposed to be—"

"Dead?" I supplied, my voice cutting through the morning chill with a razor-sharp clarity that made several students flinch.

I didn't lower my eyes. I didn't shrink back the way Emma would have done. I squared my shoulders, smoothed down my pleated navy skirt, and walked straight toward them, my heels clicking rhythmically against the stone paving.

"Good morning, Chloe," I said, stopping two feet away from her. I let my gaze sweep over her terrified, pale face, letting her see the cold, unyielding fire burning behind my eyes. "Did you miss me?"

Chloe stumbled backward, her heel catching on the edge of the fountain grate, nearly losing her balance before Madison grabbed her arm to steady her.

"You're... you're hallucinating," Madison stammered, her eyes darting frantically around the courtyard as if looking for an exit. "She's... she's having a psychotic break. Someone call the front office!"

"Save your breath, Madison," I murmured, stepping closer until the scent of her expensive floral perfume mixed with raw panic. "I’m completely sane. And I remember everything."

Lucas pushed through the crowd, his face flushed with a mixture of furious disbelief and sheer terror. "What is this game, Emma? What kind of sick stunt are you pulling? Everyone at the hospital said you weren't coming back!"

May you like

"Surprise, Lucas," I whispered, tilting my head with a cold, humorless smile. "The ghost caught an early bus."
