Chapter 6 - The Apex Predator

By Thursday morning, the atmosphere inside St. Jude’s Academy had curdled from uneasy shock into outright paranoia.

The rumor mill was operating at warp speed. Half the school believed Emma Vance had miraculously survived her fall and suffered selective amnesia; the other half whispered terrifying ghost stories in the hallways between classes.

I walked down the central corridor with my head held high, my boots clicking against the floor like a metronome counting down their final hours.

Lucas Vance was waiting for me by my locker.

He looked terrible. Dark purple bruises of exhaustion shadowed his eyes, his hair was unstyled, and his expensive tailored blazer was wrinkled at the cuffs. He had spent the last forty-eight hours trying to reach his father’s high-priced defense attorneys in the city, but according to the closed-door whispers in the faculty lounge, his family’s corporate empire was already being quietly investigated by federal prosecutors following Elena Vance’s financial audit leaks.

"We need to talk," Lucas said, stepping directly into my path as I reached my locker. His voice was rough, devoid of the charming, polished arrogance that had fooled my sister a year ago.

"I don't have anything to say to you, Lucas," I replied, spinning the combination lock.

"Cut the act, Emma," he hissed, grabbing my forearm with a tight, desperate grip. "I know you're not her."

I stopped. I didn't pull my arm away. I simply turned my head slowly and looked down at his hand gripping my wrist until he nervously released me.

"What did you call me?" I asked quietly.

Lucas swallowed hard, glancing nervously around the hallway to ensure no other students were within earshot. "You're not Emma. Emma was... she was soft. She cried when people yelled at her. You've got ice in your veins. Who the hell are you?"

I closed my locker door with a sharp bang that echoed down the hall.

"I'm Ella," I said, stepping right up to his chest until he was forced to lean back against the metal lockers. "Emma’s twin sister. And unlike Emma, I didn't come here to cry."

Lucas stared at me, the last remnants of his bravado evaporating into thin air. "You're insane. If you go to the police with this—if you try to ruin my family—my dad will bury you before you even reach the courthouse steps."

"Your father is currently answering questions from federal investigators regarding corporate embezzlement and hush-money payouts," I replied, my voice sweet as poison. "And you, Lucas? You stood in the doorway of the west stairwell and watched Chloe push my sister off a roof. You think your dad's money can buy you out of a murder charge?"

Before Lucas could stammer out a defense, the heavy double doors of the auditorium swung open, signaling the start of the mandatory morning assembly.

"Move," I whispered, brushing past his shoulder. "Your audience is waiting."
