Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the House of Cards

"Daddy! Look!"

Lucas’s small, excited voice rang out from inside the open study.

I turned my head slightly. Lucas and Leo were standing by the floor-to-ceiling window, pointing down toward the street below.

Through the glass, the scene unfolding on the asphalt outside our luxury high-rise was impossible to ignore. Three matte-black federal SUVs had blocked off the private entrance of the penthouse lobby. Armed agents in tactical vests were streaming through the revolving doors, while two senior prosecutors carrying federal subpoena folders marched past the front desk toward our private elevator bank.

Victoria rushed to the window, pressing her palms against the glass, her breath hitching in pure terror as she saw the federal insignia on the jackets below.

"No... no, this isn't happening," Victoria muttered, spinning around to glare at me with absolute hatred. "You destroyed us! For a maid? For some common woman you dug up out of the gutter? Julian, I gave you my life! I gave you a family!"

"You gave me a cage built on stolen children and forged lies," I said, my voice echoing coldly through the corridor.

At that exact moment, the private elevator dinged.

The doors slid open, revealing not the local police, but Detective Miller—the lead investigator from the cold case unit I had secretly hired three months ago to re-examine the St. Jude hospital fire, accompanied by two armed federal marshals.

Detective Miller stepped out of the elevator, holding a laminated arrest warrant packet in his hand. He walked straight past Senator Arthur Sterling without even breaking his stride, stopping directly in front of Victoria.

"Victoria Sterling-Vance," Detective Miller announced clearly, his voice carrying the weight of absolute authority. "You are being placed under arrest for conspiracy to commit kidnapping, identity fraud, and falsification of vital government records."

Victoria let out a piercing shriek, stumbling backward until she collided with her father’s chest. "Dad! Do something! Tell them who I am!"

Arthur stood frozen, his hands clenched into tight fists at his sides, realizing with absolute finality that his political immunity had just evaporated into thin air. The federal marshals stepped forward, clicking heavy steel handcuffs around Victoria’s wrists with a sharp, metallic snap.

As they led her toward the elevator, Victoria turned her head back, her eyes blazing with a final, toxic fury as she stared at Clara, who stood quietly in the doorway of the study with our two sons sheltered safely behind her skirts.

"You won't keep them!" Victoria screamed as the elevator doors began to close. "You're both going to burn for this!"

Then the doors slid shut, sealing her fate in the quiet metal box below.
