Chapter 4 - The Senator’s Gambit

I looked from Victoria’s frantic voice at the door down to Leo and Lucas, who had stopped playing with their tablet and were now staring wide-eyed at the entryway, clutching each other in terror.

Clara immediately dropped to her knees in front of the sofa, gathering both boys into her arms. "It's okay, my loves. Mommy is here. Nobody is taking you anywhere."

I walked over to my desk, unlocked a heavy titanium security drawer, and pulled out a solid steel-framed secure satellite phone—a device that bypassed all civilian towers and connected directly to my personal corporate security detail stationed across the city.

"Stay here with the boys," I told Clara, my voice firm and reassuring.

I unlocked the heavy study door and pulled it open.

Victoria stood in the hallway, her hair slightly disheveled, her eyes wide with a manic desperation. Behind her, exiting the private elevator at the end of the hall, came Senator Arthur Sterling himself.

Arthur was a tall, silver-haired man in his late sixties, impeccably tailored in a dark charcoal suit, walking with the practiced, arrogant stride of a man who believed the law was merely a suggestion written for other people. Flanking him were two burly private security contractors wearing tactical suits and carrying concealed federal warrant folders.

"Julian, thank God you're home," Arthur boomed, his voice echoing smoothly through the penthouse corridor. "We have a catastrophic security breach on our hands. Victoria called me and informed me that some unvetted, mentally unstable maid has infiltrated your home and is attempting to manipulate your children with bizarre psychological tricks."

I didn't step aside. I stood squarely in the center of the doorway, blocking their path into the study.

"The only security breach in this penthouse, Arthur, is the fact that you and your daughter have been running a multi-year child trafficking and identity fraud operation right under my roof," I said.

The Senator’s polished stride stuttered for a fraction of a second. The warm, avuncular smile froze on his face, replaced by a sharp, calculating glint in his cold blue eyes.

"Excuse me?" Arthur said, his voice dropping an octave as he stepped closer. "Julian, you're clearly under a great deal of stress. Victoria tells me you've been working too many hours in Seattle. Step aside and let these gentlemen escort that woman out before we are forced to involve the district attorney."

"Involve whoever you want, Arthur," I replied, pulling the satellite phone from my pocket and tapping the screen twice. "Because within the last sixty minutes, my corporate legal team has already transmitted the complete digital audit of the St. Jude Memorial Hospital birth records, the falsified coroner's reports, and the wire transfer receipts from your personal foundation to the United States Attorney General's office."

Arthur’s face finally lost its color. The arrogant posture crumpled.

"You didn't," Arthur whispered, his voice laced with venom.

May you like

"I did," I smiled coldly. "And right now, federal marshals are securing your downtown campaign offices and seizing every hard drive in your possession. You aren't here to rescue Victoria, Arthur. You're here because you realized the trap just snapped shut around your neck."
