Chapter 3 - Secrets Beneath the St. Jude Ashes

The private study smelled of aged leather, cedarwood, and expensive scotch. I set Leo down on the leather sofa beside his brother, handing them a silent tablet loaded with their favorite visual puzzles to keep them occupied.
Then I turned back to Clara.
She was standing near the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the glittering skyline of downtown Seattle. The afternoon sun caught the dark strands of her hair, highlighting the exact same amber warmth I had memorized during our years together at the university.
"How?" I demanded, closing the distance between us until only a few feet separated us. My hands were shaking slightly as I gripped the edge of my desk. "The hospital records... the coroner’s report... the DNA match on the charred remains pulled from the maternity ward fire..."
"All falsified, Julian," Clara interrupted softly, turning to face me. Her eyes were completely steady. There was no fear in them—only a deep, burning exhaustion.
"Falsified by whom?" I asked, my mind racing through a dozen terrifying possibilities. "The hospital was a state-funded facility. The fire investigation was conducted by the federal bureau—"
"By Arthur Sterling," Clara said, dropping the name like a heavy iron weight onto the floor.
My breath hitched. "Arthur? What does Victoria's father have to do with this?"
"Everything," Clara whispered, taking a step closer. "Four years ago, when I went into labor prematurely during that massive storm, Victoria was also in the hospital suite down the hall, supposedly losing her own child due to complications. But the truth was far darker, Julian. Victoria couldn't carry a child to term, and your family trust stipulated that your multi-billion-dollar corporate inheritance required a direct biological heir born within the first three years of marriage."
The pieces of a puzzle I had spent four years trying to ignore suddenly clicked into place with horrifying clarity.
"So she... she stole my child?" I choked out.
"She stole one of them," Clara corrected, her voice trembling slightly as tears finally spilled over her lower lashes. "I gave birth to healthy twin boys. But the moment they were delivered, Arthur’s men entered the recovery ward. They drugged me. They told Victoria that one of the twins didn't survive the birth trauma, while the other was registered under Victoria's name as her own biological son. But they made a mistake—they didn't realize until it was too late that you had fathered identical twins."
I stared at her, my vision blurring with a mixture of rage and overwhelming grief. "Identical twins... meaning both Leo and Lucas belong to us?"
"Yes, Julian," Clara nodded, a tear tracking down her cheek. "Victoria raised one as her own token heir to secure the corporate trust, while the other was hidden away in a secondary nursery wing under the care of specialized nurses, treated like a dirty secret because they couldn't risk anyone noticing the exact resemblance between the brothers."
"And the fire?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. "The coroner said—"
"The fire was set to cover up the abduction and erase my medical file from the hospital database," Clara said bitterly. "I woke up in the smoke, locked inside a utility basement with no way out. A nurse—a brave woman named Sarah who took pity on me—helped me escape through the laundry chute just as the roof collapsed. But by the time I hit the street, Arthur’s security teams were already hunting me. They told me if I ever returned to Seattle, if I ever tried to contact you or my babies, they would kill us all before we reached the end of the block."
The silence in the study returned, heavier and more suffocating than before.
Every drop of corporate success, every towering skyscraper I had built, every award and accolade I had accumulated over the past decade suddenly felt like dust and ash. I had spent four years believing the woman I loved was dead, while she had been living in the shadows, hunted by my own father-in-law, while my own children were kept like prisoners in my house by a woman who viewed them as mere pawns in a financial game.
"They won't get away with it," I said. The tone of my voice surprised even me—it wasn't angry anymore. It was cold, dead calm. The tone of a apex predator ready to tear apart anyone who threatened his pack.
Before Clara could reply, a sharp, frantic knocking echoed against the heavy oak study door.
*Bang. Bang. Bang.*

"Julian! Open this door right now!" Victoria’s voice screamed from the hallway, laced with undisguised panic. "Your father-in-law is downstairs in the lobby with federal marshals! He’s filing an emergency custody petition to have those brats removed from the premises immediately!"
