Chapter 4 - The Siege of the Obsidian Citadel

By nightfall, the war had reached the inner sanctum of the Obsidian Citadel.
The loyalist imperial guards had surrendered en masse once word spread that the princess wielding the legendary Golden Blood had returned to reclaim her birthright. Only the inner royal guard—bribed and corrupted by decades of Valerius’s tyrannical rule—remained holed up inside the grand throne room behind massive steel-reinforced doors.
Lyra stood before the towering oak and iron doors, flanked by a newly formed alliance of outer-caldera dragon clans who had suffered under Valerius’s oppressive taxes and cruel caste system.
"Break it down," Lyra commanded quietly.
Instead of battering rams, Lyra simply raised her hand, pressing her palm flat against the cold metal of the doors. A concentrated beam of white-hot golden fire surged from her fingertips, melting the hinges and turning the thick iron locks into liquid slag in a matter of seconds.
With a thunderous kick, the doors flew inward.
Inside the grand throne room, Emperor Valerius stood alone. His crown was crooked, his royal robes torn, and his hands trembled as he gripped a poisoned dagger in one hand and the ancient Sun-Stone of the Draconic Empire in the other.
"You think winning this throne brings you victory, girl?" Valerius snarled, his eyes bloodshot with desperate madness. "This empire was built on blood, deceit, and fire! Without me, the clans will tear each other apart! You are too soft to rule!"
"I am not soft, Father," Lyra said, stepping slowly into the grand hall, her boots clicking rhythmically against the polished marble floor. "I am simply just. And justice in this empire starts with cleaning out the garbage."
Valerius lunged forward with psychotic speed, driving the poisoned dagger straight toward her heart.
It was a cowardly, desperate strike. Lyra caught his wrist mid-air with effortless ease, her fingers tightening around his bone until a sickening crack echoed through the hall. Valerius dropped the dagger with a howl of pain.
Before he could recover, Lyra swept his legs out from under him, sending the former emperor sprawling onto the cold marble floor at the foot of the obsidian throne. She walked past him, climbed the three stone steps, and seated herself comfortably upon the massive throne of bone and black stone.
She picked up the fallen royal crown, turning it over in her hands as the golden fire dancing around her fingertips melted the jagged, cruel spikes into smooth, elegant wreaths of victory.
Valerius scrambled backward, looking up at her with naked terror. "Please... I am your father..."
"You stopped being my father the day you threw me into the ash-chamber," Lyra said coldly. She didn't execute him; she banished him. "Guards! Strip him of his titles, lock him in the lowest dungeons for the rest of his natural life, and let him learn what it means to live in the dark without power."

As the guards dragged the screaming, flailing former emperor away, absolute silence reclaimed the throne room. The tyranny of the old guard was officially over.
