Chapter 2 - The Bloodline Trial and the Crimson Betrayal

Three weeks later, the grand coliseum of Pyra Prime was packed to maximum capacity for the annual blood-tribute festival. Tens of thousands of elite dragon warriors, high lords, and nobles filled the tiers of the amphitheater, roaring with bloodthirsty anticipation as the grand tournament commenced.

At the center of the arena stood Lord Cassian—the emperor’s favored nephew, a ruthless, sadistic brute whose red dragon fire had incinerated dozens of opponents over the years. Cassian was slated to inherit the throne following Lyra's supposed death, and today’s festival was designed to cement his absolute supremacy over the empire.

High Emperor Valerius sat upon the imperial golden throne, sipping enchanted nectar, a smug smile plastered across his scarred face. Beside him sat Lady Vespera, the head high priestess who had engineered the false prophecies that kept the royal court under her manipulative thumb.

"Today, my lords, we celebrate the purity of our bloodline," Valerius proclaimed, his voice echoing magically across the stadium. "Unburdened by weaklings or flaws, our empire stands invincible!"

Suddenly, the ground beneath the coliseum began to tremble. Not with a normal earthquake, but with a rhythmic, heavy thumping that made the massive stone pillars vibrate.

*BOOM. BOOM. BOOM.*

The heavy iron portcullis at the far end of the arena—sealed shut for a century and reserved only for condemned execution beasts—began to buckle outward. Deep, echoing growls reverberated from the shadows, sending a chill of pure primal terror through the front rows of the nobility.

Cassian smirked, drawing his massive, fire-enchanted broadsword. "Release the beast! Let it test my blade!"

The portcullis didn't just open; it exploded into a million twisted iron shards.

Through the billows of smoke and dust stepped a single figure. She wore a battle-armor forged from polished black obsidian and laced with glowing veins of liquid gold. Her midnight hair flowed wildly in the thermal updraft, and her eyes burned with the terrifying, majestic radiance of a primordial sun.

It was Lyra.

The entire coliseum fell into a suffocating, dead silence. Noble lords dropped their goblets. High priests staggered backward in sheer disbelief. Emperor Valerius stood up so violently his golden throne scraped loudly against the dais, his face draining of all color.

"Impossible..." Valerius choked out, his voice trembling. "She... she was supposed to freeze in the ash-chamber!"

Cassian laughed nervously, trying to mask his sudden, surging panic as he pointed his glowing sword at her. "You? The powerless rat of the Vane dynasty? You think you can walk back into the sacred arena? Guards! Tear her apart!"

Three elite royal guards lunged forward, channeling crimson dragon flames meant to vaporize her instantly.

Lyra didn't draw a sword. She simply raised her palm.

A shockwave of blinding golden fire erupted from her hand—a wave of heat so immense and pure that the crimson flames thrown by the guards were instantly swallowed and absorbed into her aura. With a flick of her wrist, a lash of golden lightning whipped through the air, flinging all three guards against the stadium walls where they slumped unconscious.

Cassian’s face twisted into an ugly mask of rage. Roaring like a madman, he unleashed his full dragon transformation, swelling into a monstrous, scaled red behemoth of muscle and claws, lunging directly at Lyra to crush her into dust.
