Chapter 4 - The Outcast at the Gates

Two weeks had passed, and the social landscape of the city’s elite had undergone a seismic shift. The tabloids were buzzing with the sudden, scandalous downfall of Veronica and her mother, who had gone from high-society princesses living in a multi-million-dollar mansion to penniless outcasts crashing in a cramped downtown motel. Without access to Alexander’s unlimited funds, their high-rolling friends vanished overnight, leaving them facing mountains of unpaid boutique bills and mounting legal debts.
On a bright, crisp Saturday morning, Veronica stood outside the massive iron gates of the Sterling estate, clutching a designer handbag that now looked desperately out of place, her makeup smeared and her pride utterly shattered. She pressed the intercom buzzer repeatedly, her voice cracking through the static speaker.
“Mr. Sterling! Please! Just let me talk to him! I’m sorry! I didn't know—!” Veronica sobbed into the cold metal box, ignoring the stares of passing pedestrians.
The security guard inside the gatehouse didn't even blink. He pressed a button, cutting off the intercom feed entirely, leaving Veronica screaming into a dead wire. There was no going back. The golden cage she had taken for granted had slammed its doors shut forever, lock and key discarded in the abyss of her own cruelty.

Inside the courtyard, Sofia stood by the sparkling stone fountain, wearing a bright yellow sundress that caught the morning light. She watched the gates from a safe distance, feeling no anger or malice—only a profound, liberating sense of peace. The shadows that had haunted her childhood had finally lifted, leaving behind a wide-open horizon where she no longer needed to bow to anyone.
