Chapter 6 - The Shadows of Rikers Island

The high-society fortress that Agnes Bennett had spent three decades meticulously constructing was gone, replaced by the damp, steel-bar reality of the county detention center. Stripped of her designer clothing, her jewelry, and her social status, Agnes sat on a bolted-down aluminum bunk inside a twelve-by-twelve holding cell, listening to the echoing clangs of heavy doors and the shouting of guards in the corridor.
Across the room, her daughter Chloe paced back and forth like a caged animal, her mascara running down her tear-stained cheeks as she clutched a cheap plastic cup of lukewarm tap water.
"I don't understand why our lawyers aren't answering their phones!" Chloe sobbed hysterically, her voice echoing off the concrete walls. "They told us the appeal would be filed by morning! Don't they know who we are?!"
Agnes didn't answer. She stared blankly at the chipped green paint on the wall opposite her bed. Her mind kept replaying the moment Marcus Marche had stepped out of the dark hallway, his cold gray eyes dismantling her entire existence with a few calculated sentences. She finally realized the terrifying truth: Marcus hadn't just exposed her; he had completely dismantled every financial lifeline she possessed. Their bank accounts were frozen, their credit cards declined, and their former country club friends had blocked their phone numbers within minutes of the news breaking.
The heavy steel door of their cell rattled violently. A tired correctional officer in a dark uniform slid the small meal slot open and tossed two gray, unappetizing trays onto the floor.
"Mail call for inmates Bennett," the officer muttered flatly before walking away.
Chloe lunged toward the trays, kicking them aside to grab a small, white legal envelope resting beneath. She ripped it open with trembling fingers, her eyes scanning the formal letterhead of Marcus’s corporate legal conglomerate.
As she read the first two lines, the color drained completely from her face. The paper slipped from her fingers, fluttering down to rest beside the unmapped prison food tray.
"What is it?" Agnes whispered hoarsely, her voice cracking for the first time. "What does it say?"

"They... they seized the storage unit," Chloe whispered in absolute horror, her knees buckling beneath her. "All our designer clothes, our furs, the inherited jewelry... everything we hid away. Marcus’s legal team filed an emergency asset forfeiture motion to satisfy the court-ordered restitution and legal fees. We have nothing left. Absolutely nothing."
Agnes closed her eyes, the cold reality of her absolute ruin crashing down upon her. She had spent a lifetime treating everyone around her with cruelty, believing her wealth and arrogance made her invincible. Now, trapped behind bars with no allies left in the world, she was entirely at the mercy of the system she had spent decades trying to manipulate.
