Chapter 4 - The Healing Process**

By 2:00 a.m., the grand manor was finally quiet. The guests had long since fled into the night, and the glittering chandeliers had been dimmed to a warm, comforting amber glow.
Up in the east wing recovery nursery, the pale yellow walls were bathed in soft moonlight. Salvatore sat on the edge of the custom medical bed, gently adjusting the new, custom-fitted orthopedic brace around Ruby’s leg, ensuring the padding was soft and secure.
Ruby watched him quietly, her big dark eyes filled with a mixture of awe and lingering uncertainty. “Daddy… are we going to have to move again?”
Salvatore stopped moving, his heart aching at the profound insecurity written across his little girl’s face. He set the medical strap down, reached out, and pulled Ruby gently onto his lap, wrapping his arms around her tightly.
“Listen to me, Ruby,” Salvatore said fiercely, his voice steady and absolute. “We are never leaving Ashcombe Manor. This is your home. Nobody will ever hurt you here again. I swear to you, my entire life is dedicated to keeping you safe, happy, and loved.”
Ruby sniffled, resting her head against his chest. “Do you mean it?”
“On my life,” Salvatore promised, pressing a tender kiss to the top of her dark hair.
Over the next few weeks, the legal fallout from the gala incident was swift, brutal, and absolute. Lucinda’s family name, already built on shaky financial ground, collapsed entirely as Salvatore’s corporate legal team unleashed a barrage of civil lawsuits and forensic audits that stripped them of their remaining assets. Lucinda was denied bail and faced a mandatory prison sentence of over a decade with no possibility of parole. The media dubbed the scandal “The Fall of the Emerald Vixen,” serving as a stark warning to anyone who thought they could prey on the vulnerable within the city’s upper echelons.
Inside the manor, the dark cloud of fear lifted. Bernadette, the head housekeeper, filled the halls with the comforting scent of vanilla baking, warm soups, and fresh flowers, while specialized physical therapists worked gently with Ruby every afternoon.

Slowly, day by day, the limp began to fade. The terror in Ruby’s eyes was replaced by bright, uninhibited laughter as she raced her golden retriever puppy across the lawns.
